Five... players to score their first Spurs goal against Everton

Sun 02 April 2023, 10:15|Tottenham Hotspur

Ever since the Premier League kicked-off 30 years ago in 1992/93, we've scored more goals (97) against Everton in the competition than any other team.

That record has seen number of players score their first goal for the Club against the Toffees, and we've picked out five below - three in the Premier League era and two legendary Spurs marksmen before it...

Bobby Smith - 21.01.1956

When Bobby Smith joined us from Chelsea in December 1955, we were one place off the bottom of Division One, but he would go on to score the goals that not only staved off relegation that term but also helped us to unprecedented glory over the next few years. Perhaps the biggest surprise was that it took Smith six games to net his first goal in our colours, when he opened the scoring seven minutes into our home game with Everton on 21 January 1956. Sonny Walters delivered a free-kick and Smith was there to head home, a goal which would prove to be the first of an impressive haul of 208 Spurs goals in 317 appearances. Only Harry Kane and Jimmy Greaves have scored more. Smith top-scored in our glorious Double-winning season of 1960/61, netted the first in our FA Cup Final victory over Leicester City that season and also scored in the final the following season against Burnley. A genuine Spurs great.

Clive Allen - 25.08.1984

Clive Allen showed just why Spurs swooped to sign him from Queens Park Rangers by scoring twice on his debut against Everton on the opening day of the 1984/85 campaign. Having already spent time at Arsenal, Crystal Palace and QPR, Allen added another London club to his list when joining us in the summer of 1984 and first up was a tough trip to Goodison Park. We fell behind when Adrian Heath converted a 16th-minute penalty before Mark Falco levelled on 39 minutes. Then, Allen marked his debut with his first Spurs just two minutes before the interval. He wasn’t the only debutant to score either, as John Chiedozie netted in the 51st minute to make it 3-1, while Allen rounded off a great performance with his second and our fourth. Although injuries thwarted his progress during his first two years with us, Clive lit up the Lane on a regular basis in 1986/87, famously scoring 49 competitive goals.

Oyvind Leonhardsen - 14.08.1999

Norwegian international Oyvind Leonhardsen no doubt enjoyed scoring his first Spurs goal against Everton back in August 1999, but not just because it was his first strike for his new club. The energetic midfielder had joined us from Liverpool just a couple of weeks earlier, so netting against his former Merseyside rivals will have only enhanced the moment for him. After making his debut as a substitute against West Ham on the opening day of the 1999/2000 season, Leonhardsen was given his full debut by George Graham as we beat Newcastle United in our next game. He kept his place for the visit of Everton, who went ahead on 14 August when David Unsworth converted from the penalty spot. Tim Sherwood levelled, but Unsworth slammed home another penalty to make it 2-1 before Leonhardsen opened his Spurs account, hooking home at the far post from a David Ginola cross on 82 minutes. We nicked it late on as well, Steffen Iversen heading home the winner.

Dean Marney - 01.01.2005

We could have picked any one of three players from this game, as the trio of Dean Marney, Reto Ziegler and Pedro Mendes all scored their first Spurs goals in this New Year’s Day win over Everton. But Marney gets the nod as he went one better and scored twice on his first full game at White Hart Lane! The Academy graduate had made three appearances the season before, two off the bench and a full debut at Manchester United before Martin Jol started him for the visit of Everton on the opening day of 2005. He opened the scoring as well, lofting a clever finish over goalkeeper Richard Wright before Ziegler opened his Spurs account from close range. After Tim Cahill pulled one back, midfielder Mendes hit a powerful right-foot drive for his first Spurs goal and Marney assisted Robbie Keane to make it 4-1. The youngster then scored the goal of the game, curling home from 25 yards to cap a day to remember, with James McFadden adding a late consolation for the visitors.

Jermaine Jenas - 15.10.05

Another player to open their Spurs account against Everton during 2005 was Jermaine Jenas, who scored in a 2-0 win on 15 October. Having come through the ranks at Nottingham Forest, we signed the all-action midfielder from Newcastle United and he was five games into his Spurs career when he found the target for the first time in our colours. Martin Jol’s side were flying high at the time, while Everton were rock bottom of the Premiership table and remained there following this result. Two goals in five minutes settled the issue as Mido headed home Jenas’ cross from the right before Jenas got on the scoresheet himself, glancing Jermain Defoe’s cross past Nigel Martyn. That was the first of 26 goals in 202 appearances for ‘JJ’, who spent eight years in N17.
