Cristian previews AFC Bournemouth: “We have to learn from the past”

Cristian Stellini is targeting a positive start to Saturday’s game against AFC Bournemouth after we were forced to do it the hard way in the reverse fixture against the Cherries earlier in the season.

We found ourselves 2-0 down just after half-time when we went to the Vitality Stadium back in October and needed a late, late winner from Rodrigo Bentancur to salvage victory after earlier goals from Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies had brought us back level.

While none of that trio of scorers will feature this weekend due to injury, Cristian is keen to avoid a repeat of the scenario that saw us fall behind when we face the 15th-placed Cherries at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Bournemouth is a team that won two games in their last three, is a team that changed a lot since the transfer market,” said our Acting Head Coach.

“They’ve had a good period and we have to take care of this, we have to respect this and we have to play at our best to try to win the game.

It was really hard to progress in the match and to win that game. We lived this experience, we have to learn from the past and tomorrow we have to start the game well.

“We have to be careful with every team that we play against and with every opponent – in this case we lived a great experience (in October) to be careful tomorrow because we were 2-0 down and it was really hard to progress in the match and to win that game. We lived this experience, we have to learn from the past and tomorrow we have to start the game well.”

Ahead of another Saturday 3pm kick-off, Cristian said the feeling around the squad this week has been a buoyant one in the wake of our victory over Brighton last time out, but underlined how there’s also been a sense of focus as we continue our pursuit of a top four finish.

“It was a good mood because we won an important game but we know that we have eight finals to play, so we are focused on the next seven weeks,” he added.
