All action but no goals in Germany - on-the-whistle report

Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Spurs

Tue 04 October 2022, 21:53|Tottenham Hotspur

A lively encounter somehow ended goalless at Deutsche Bank Park on Tuesday evening, as we picked up what could be a valuable point against Eintracht Frankfurt in our UEFA Champions League Group D encounter.

Both sides had spells of pressure throughout the game and created plenty chances within them, but just four of the 23 shots at goal in the game were on target despite plenty of goalmouth action.

We went close on a few occasions after some lovely build-up play in the first half, Harry Kane sliding an effort a yard wide, Heung-Min Son going even closer with a right-foot curler before Ivan Perisic’s shot flicked off Kristijan Jakic and spun inches wide just prior to the break. At the other end, Sebastian Rode’s shot deflected off the head of Perisic and flew over the bar on 18 minutes while it was Rode with the only shot on target in that opening half, but even that was just a looping effort that was easy for Hugo Lloris.

There was no change after the break either as neither side could convert their chances. Lloris was at full-stretch to keep out Ansgar Knauff’s volley on the turn, Son hit one that skimmed the top of the Frankfurt net and Jesper Lindstrom blazed over from 18 yards after we lost possession trying to play out from the back.

It was fairly frantic stuff at times, both sides playing well until the final third when either the final ball was lacking or defenders were making blocks. Kane’s deflected half-volley needed watching into his hands by Trapp and Son diverted just wide from substitute Ryan Sessegnon’s low ball in to the near post as the game flowed from end to end, but the deadlock couldn’t be broken and we headed back to north London with another point in the bag, with two home games still to come.

'We need to be more clinical'

Antonio Conte said: "The performance was positive because I think we played a good game with great intensity, we put a lot of pressure in every zone of the pitch and created chances. If I have to find something that we have to improve, for sure, we need to be more clinical. In this type of game, when you create chances, you have to be clinical, and you have to score. If you don’t score, you don’t win."
