Drew: “Let’s make this our fortress”

Drew Spence thoroughly enjoyed our first game at Brisbane Road for Sunday’s 1-0 win against Liverpool in the Women’s Super League and urged Spurs supporters to help make the stadium a fortress.

“We’re buzzing,” she said after the game. “It’s important to get the three points and the clean sheet. That’s what we’ve been gutted about over the past few games, that we’ve been conceding sloppy goals, so to get a clean sheet and three points is huge for us.

“It’s a new ground for Tottenham and we had great support out here with loads of fans, so we’re really looking forward to continuing to come here for home games and making this our fortress.”

Last week it was announced that Ashleigh Neville had won the WSL Goal of the Month for September with her 40-yard goal against Leicester City, and Drew almost became a candidate for October’s competition when she venomously fired towards goal from long-range against Liverpool, only to see the effort crash back off the post.

“It was a turnover for them and I just took a gamble with the shot,” she said. “Unfortunately it hit the post. I think I need to start getting more into those positions and keep taking those opportunities and shots like that. It’s unfortunate but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

Spurs showed determination to keep Liverpool at bay during the second half, but would’ve been gutted to drop points following such a dominant display in the opening 45 minutes.

“If we’d have walked away without three points we’d have been devastated,” Drew said. “We knew we were all over them in the first half. I hit the post, Ash hit the bar, we had another chance and on another day we have to take those chances because we could get punished. We’re thankful for the three points really.

“We know they’ve got a long throw-in that’s basically like a corner and we know how much that’s troubled teams in the past so we had to make sure we were on top of our game. We dug it out in the end and that’s what’s important.”

Manchester City are the visitors to Brisbane Road on Saturday for an 11.30am kick-off in the WSL.

“Every game’s a big game so it’s no different for us,” Drew said. “We’ve got to keep this momentum that we’ve got from this game and take it into the next one.”
