Shelina: “We have to improve the 90 minute performance”

Mon 21 November 2022, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Women captain Shelina Zadorsky wants to see a more positive performance across all 90 minutes, following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

“I’m frustrated to be honest because I know the qualities we have in this team and I know that we can put in a performance across 90 minutes, but there were three goals that are preventable, so we can look back on that and know how to fix that,” she said.

“On the flip side, positives were some combination play we had, when we did press high we won the ball high, getting shots off… Drew’s chance in the end as well. Those are positives to look at but I want us to come here and be proud of the 90 minute performance so I think we have improvement to do on that.

“We have the quality and the players who love combining and love one and two-touch play and can exploit opposition. I think then it’s just being able to get in their final third with more numbers so that then we can relax and keep possession in their final third and come away with the best opportunity and create the best opportunity.

“People who came on did amazing for us as always. We just needed that right from the start.”

Shelina said that there was an emphasis on taking pride in the performance during the half-time team talk.

“The messaging was strong and it was intense that we need to take pride in the second 45 and be able to look at ourselves and be proud of how much we want it and how much we give out there,” she said.

“Continuing to improve our winning mentality is a must and we can look at the positives and be able to take that, and self reflection on your individual performance and being able to say that you’ve given it everything.

“We’ve come a long way in our style of play. I think we had some great possession today and some great passing sequences. It’s just being able to have the killer edge to put the ball in the back of the net.

“For me, I want to keep clean sheets, so it’s eliminating those opportunities that they get, especially on set pieces and whatnot. I’m always super critical of my own performance as well and I just want to be able to push us to do more and continue on a path that we can be proud of.”
