19 and counting - Sonny's best Premier League goals return

Mon 02 May 2022, 09:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son's double in our 3-1 win against Leicester City on Sunday secured a personal milestone - his best goals return in a Premier League season.

His swivel and close-range finish for 2-0 and wonderful curler into the top corner from 22 yards for 3-0 took him to 19 goals this term - two better than his previous best, 17 last season. That's also his best goals tally for a league campaign throughout his career at Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen, going back to 2010/11.

With four games to go - Liverpool (away, 7 May), Arsenal (home, 12 May), Burnley (home, 15 May) and Norwich City (away, 22 May) - Sonny not only has the chance to crack the 20-goal milestone in a league campaign for the first time, he's also chasing his best-ever tally for a season, his 22 in all competitions from 2020/21. He's now on 20.

Sonny's league goals at Spurs - season by season

2015/16 - 4 goals in 28 appearances (8/40 all comps)
2016/17 - 14 in 34 (21/47 all comps)
2017/18 - 12 in 37 (18 in 52)
2018/19 - 12 in 31 (20 in 48)
2019/20 - 11 in 30 (18 in 41)
2020/21 - 17 in 37 (22 in 52)
2021/22 - 19 in 31 (20 in 41)

Antonio Conte was full of praise for Sonny after a crucial victory against Leicester in terms of the race for two four as we recovered from tough outings against Brighton (0-1) and Brentford (0-0) in our last two matches.

Speaking as his post-match press conference, Antonio said: "I gave Sonny a big hug because, after an amazing goal, my question was, which is his favourite foot, right or left? He scored a fantastic goal, and three minutes before when I spoke with him, I said, 'go for five or six minutes, then I have to make a change'.

"I said to him that he listened that I wanted to make a change, and decided to score this amazing goal! We are talking about a great player, a fantastic player. But it's important at the end of the season to celebrate a big achievement with the team, otherwise, it remains only a personal success only to score these types of goals."
