Ledley visits local primary school to celebrate World Book Day

Ledley King visited local young students today (Thursday 3 March) on World Book Day, a worldwide celebration which aims to change children’s lives through a love of books and shared reading.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from West Lea Primary School – a school located in Tottenham which caters for students with educational needs – were joined by our Club Ambassador for a reading session.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, lockdowns have made it difficult for children to access physical books due to school and public library closures. The mission of World Book Day is to offer every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

The Club is marking the 25th World Book Day by donating book vouchers and copies of books to local schools across the community. This year’s book donations include ‘Silly Book of True or False!’ by Matt Lucas, ‘Welcome to Grimwood’ by Nadia Shireen and ‘Peak Peril’ by Sharna Jackson.

Through the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, the Club delivers a range of creative, innovative and engaging programmes for people from our local communities, including the Premier League Primary Stars Programme.

In partnership with the National Literacy Trust, the Premier League Primary Stars Programme uses the appeal of football to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills. Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coaches deliver educational sessions to help build students’ confidence in reading, using examples from football to explore poetry and communication.

Speaking at the school today, Ledley said: “World Book Day is a brilliant event, encouraging students to be creative and get involved with reading. The Foundation do a fantastic job at helping to build children’s confidence through the Premier League Primary Stars Programme and, by donating books and vouchers to local schools, they are helping to make education more accessible for so many in the community.”
