Antonio’s verdict on convincing win at Brighton

Wed 16 March 2022, 22:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Antonio Conte felt we showed our intent from the first whistle in a commanding performance and 2-0 win against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.

Cristian Romero’s somewhat fortuitous first goal for the Club on 37 minutes - Dejan Kulusevski’s shot clipped off Cuti’s shin and spun into the corner - and a clinical finish on the break from Harry Kane just before the hour, sprinting onto Rodrigo Bentancur’s pass, secured an important victory in the Premier League.

That goal saw Harry become the Premier League’s all-time record away goalscorer (95) and moved him above Frank Lampard into fifth place in the league’s all-time goalscoring list on 178.

We had to get these three points, very important for our ambition, our target... I want to see this type of performance

A controlled display, clean sheet - all music to Antonio’s ears. “I want to see this type of performance,” he told us pitchside at the Amex. “From the start we were very good, we played with personality, and showed from the start we wanted to get the three points.

“The clean sheet is very important, against a team who are very strong from set pieces. Tonight, the focus, the concentration was high. I think we’re going step by step and I’m beginning to see my team improving in every game.

“I said this to the players this week, we’re having good performances, and in the last period sometimes the final result wasn’t positive, but the performances... for example, in the last game against United, I thought we deserved more than to lose the game. For sure, also, when you lose sometimes, like against United, we learn. We have to learn. The defeat has to help you to learn and to become better than before.

“We had to get these three points, very important for our ambition, our target, and it's right to have a target. To try to reach fourth is very difficult, the level of difficulty is very high, but at the same time it’s right to have the ambition, for the players to have a target and also to improve, to improve our play, to score goals, to create chances, also to make our fans proud of their team.”
