Internationals - Finalissima glory for Cuti and Gio

Thu 02 June 2022, 10:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso helped Argentina win the Finalissima with a convincing 3-0 victory against Italy at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The trophy is the latest edition of what was previously known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, last staged in 1993, bringing together the South American (the CONMEBOL's Copa America) and European (UEFA) champions.

'Cuti' and Gio, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Villarreal, both started as La Albiceleste dominated against the Azzurri in front of 87,112 fans to set a national record of 32 matches unbeaten. Cuti also helped Lionel Scaloni's team keep a ninth successive clean sheet. He played 85 minutes while Gio was substituted in the second minute of injury time. Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala were on target.

Elsewhere, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon remained on the bench as Wales lost their UEFA Nations League opener 2-1 against Poland in Wroclaw. Wales have a bigger target on their minds, though, and now know that they'll face Ukraine in a World Cup play-off at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday (5pm). Ukraine beat Scotland 3-1 in the play-off semi-final at Hampden Park on Wednesday night. The winners of the final go through to the World Cup in Qatar in November.

Isak Solberg was on the bench as Norway Under-19s lost a European U19 Championship qualifier 3-2 against Holland in Rotterdam, while fellow goalkeeper Aaron Maguire started and played an hour as the Republic of Ireland Under-19s beat Iceland 3-0 in a friendly in Pinitar, Spain.
