Sonny on Korea: “The week went too quickly for me!"

Wed 20 July 2022, 15:30|Tottenham Hotspur

Time flew back home for Heung-Min Son - and he certainly had fun!

The South Korean captain is a superstar in Seoul, and we all experienced a taste of the adulation and support that follows him with every step he takes during a wonderful week in his homeland.

The feeling is certainly mutual from Sonny, who must have signed thousands of shirts and posed for even more selfies during the week in Seoul, every single request met with respect and that famous smile.

He also did the business on the pitch, with two goals in our opening match of the Coupang Play Series, a 6-3 win against Team K League in Seoul on Wednesday, followed by an assist for Harry Kane in our 1-1 draw against a tough Sevilla side in Suwon on Saturday.

It was amazing to play in this stadium, and Seoul, the fans were unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it. I’m really grateful

Speaking moments after saying thanks to the fans on a lap of honour at Suwon World Cup Stadium, Sonny told us: “The week went too quickly for me! It was amazing to play in this stadium, and Seoul, the fans were unbelievable. I couldn’t believe it. I’m really grateful. I feel a big responsibility because I look at these people looking for me, they are very happy, and I know I need to do better. I’m very grateful, very happy.”

Having played international football into mid-June, Sonny only joined the squad when they touched down at Incheon Airport last weekend, but he’s already bagged 45 minutes and then 70 against Sevilla in our first two pre-season matches. Rangers are next on Saturday (3pm) - and you can follow that match live from Ibrox on SPURSPLAY.

After six weeks apart, our deadly duo snapped straight back in action, with both Sonny and Harry scoring twice each against Team K League before Sonny set up Harry for our goal against Sevilla, somehow threading the ball through to the England skipper as he was challenged on the edge of the box, Harry doing the rest from 12 yards.

Sonny added: “First of all, I wanted to pass to Harry earlier, but I felt the defender read the situation, so I delayed a little and everyone thinks it’s lucky, but I meant the pass! Harry obviously inside the box is so clinical, he just needs to have a half-chance. He did a fantastic job again.”
