Gr-eight summer for Legends so far!

Thu 28 July 2022, 16:13|Tottenham Hotspur

The Spurs Legends team has scored eight goals in back-to-back games in recent weeks – and they’ll be hoping for more as their busy summer of fixtures continues.

Their latest outing yielded an 8-4 victory over the North West Spurs Supporters’ Club at Cheadle Town FC near Stockport on 26 June, which featured a special guest appearance from Club Ambassador Michael Dawson.

In a rematch from last year, the Legends opened up a 4-0 lead by half-time, the pick of the goals coming from Michael Brown as he latched onto Brian Statham’s cut-back and exhibited some dazzling footwork before finding the top corner to make it 3-0 on 24 minutes. Striker Paul McVeigh netted with close-range finishes either side of that, while former Spurs youngster Mark Hughes opened the scoring nine minutes in.

Reunited with former centre-half partner Sebastien Bassong in the Legends’ defence during the first period, Dawson switched sides at the break to play for North West Spurs and he certainly lifted their team, although he could do nothing to stop midfielder Brown from drilling home on 52 minutes, the same player subsequently hitting the bar with Hughes on hand to tuck home the rebound for 6-0 shortly afterwards.

The Supporters’ Club, managed by another former Spurs favourite in the form of Paul Robinson, enjoyed a spell in the ascendency after that with Neil Bayliss-Rowe, Colin Myers, Ste Tracey and Dawson clawing them back to 6-4, but Hughes completed his hat-trick to thwart any signs of a comeback before Pascal Chimbonda rounded off the scoring five minutes from time.

It marked the second time in as many matches that Chimbonda had scored a late eighth goal for the Legends after he dramatically netted a penalty with the last kick of the game to secure an 8-8 draw against a charity side at Maidstone United in Kent on 12 June.

Already on target from open play during the first half, he coolly slotted home from 12 yards after Hughes’ cross had been handled in the box, saving the team from a rare loss. Remarkably, it was the Legends’ third spot-kick of the match, the first converted by David Howells after he was brought down in the area towards the end of the first period and the second scored by Hughes in the wake of a challenge from the charity side’s goalkeeper on Chimbonda that led to the custodian being sent off. Guest player Laurie Wilson was responsible for the Legends’ other four goals during the course of the contest, with goalkeeper Jimmy Walker pulling off a handful of important saves to help the team avoid defeat.

Next up for the Legends is a clash with the Yorkshire Spurs Supporters’ Club this Sunday (31 July, kick-off 2pm). The match is being held at Marine AFC in Liverpool and will serve to officially open the new 3G pitch at the club our first team faced in the FA Cup in January, 2021.

Following that, the team will be in action against Harwich Angels at Harwich & Parkeston FC on the Essex coast on Sunday 14 August, kick-off 2pm.
