Heung-Min Son climbed into the Club’s all-time top 10 goalscoring list with his hat-trick in our 4-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday. Who did he leapfrog? Robbie Keane and Teddy Sheringham.
Sonny’s treble took him to 125 goals for us in 318 appearances since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in August, 2015, lifting him over Robbie (122) and Teddy (124) and into our all-time top 10. The South Korean star has also matched his best total yet in a Premier League season (17) with seven matches remaining and is now hot on the heels of Liverpool’s Mo Salah (20) in the race for the Golden Boot.
Speaking exclusively to us on Sunday, here’s what our legendary former strikers Keano and Teddy had to say about Sonny...
Robbie Keane
“Congratulations to Sonny, an unbelievable, top, top player, and a top guy as well. I think he’ll go down as one of the best and to go into the top 10 goalscorers is incredible. The goals, the energy he brings to the team... he’s unbelievable to watch, always puts you on the edge of your seat, his enthusiasm, his will to get at defenders, his energy. He brings a feel-good factor to the group and to the fans. A fantastic player, I’ve always said he’s one of my favourites. Congratulations again, Sonny, keep scoring my friend!”
Teddy Sheringham
"You are always looking at Sonny to make something happen. He has great ability, and he can score a goal, which is the icing on the cake for a wide man/number 10/free role player, who has a bit of everything. Playing off both feet is massive. He takes chances with ease, both sides, which is very unusual. I know we’ve Harry Kane, who does the same, but Sonny’s left-foot finish at Villa, tucking it in the corner, looks easy, but there aren’t many players who can do that. If you don’t get the technique right, you can scuff them into the keeper, punch it past the post, but he puts a lovely bit of curl on it because his technique is perfection, rolls it into the corner, makes it look like an easy goal, but I can assure you it’s far from it. He has that tenacity which makes him very hard to shake off the ball. He’s got a bit of everything, blistering pace as well, that stretches teams and gives Harry Kane even more space. I love that almost telepathic understanding with Harry, and Harry is phenomenal as well. He’s got everything - as I told everyone five years ago!”
