Lucas Moura has described the burst of emotion when Carlos Vinicius opened the scoring in our 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday.
‘Vini’ tapped home after great work from Lucas on 29 minutes and reacted with a huge scream, banged the post, and the pair then chest-bumped before pointing skywards together. Harry Kane secured the three points from the penalty spot in the second half.
After a tough week, it was a goal that meant so much - not least on a personal level for Carlos, who marked his second start in the Premier League with his first goal, and 10th in all competitions this season.
Lucas, his great friend and fellow Brazilian, gave us this insight afterwards. “It was a mix of a lot of feelings, anger, the happiness of his first goal, anger because of the last game,” said Lucas, referring to our Europa League exit against Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday.
We know how Vini works every day, how he wanted to score this goal in the Premier League, and what it means for him
“I felt very, very bad (after Dinamo). It was a very difficult week. We needed to show an answer, we needed to show character and attitude and when Vini scored, I was so happy for him, and I also know how much we needed the three points.
“I’m very happy for Vini and the team today. We know how Vini works every day, how he wanted to score this goal in the Premier League, and what it means for him. After the goal, it was an unbelievable feeling.”
Lucas was outstanding at Villa Park. He set up the first and later provided the pass for Harry Kane’s penalty award. He was everywhere, inspired and later named Man of the Match.
He added: “After a difficult week, we should give an answer today, and that’s exactly what we did. I thought the performance was amazing, the attitude we showed is exactly what we didn’t show in the last game.
“That’s why the feeling was very bad. That’s why today I’m very happy for the team, very happy for the performance, and of course the three points, very important. That’s it. Now we need to keep going in this way. That’s the mentality.”
