Internationals - Toby edges out Pierre, tributes to Christian

Thu 17 June 2021, 19:01|Tottenham Hotspur

Toby Alderweireld's Belgium came back to beat Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's Denmark 2-1 on an emotional evening in Euro 2020 in Copenhagen on Thursday.

Players and fans paid tribute and showed support for Christian Eriksen, our legendary former midfielder who suffered a cardiac arrest in Denmark's opener against Finland on Saturday.

The latest on Christian - 305 appearances for us, 2013-2020 - from the DBU is that he will now be fitted with an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator - heart starter), stating 'this device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances'.

A huge Denmark number 10 shirt was displayed before kick-off at the Parken Stadium, Jan Vertonghen, another Spurs legend and former team-mate of Christian both here and at Ajax, presented Danish skipper Simon Kjaer with a signed shirt and then, on 10 minutes, play stopped and there was a minute's applause from players, officials and supporters.

Earning his 43rd cap, Pierre claimed the assist as Denmark made a dream start, taking the lead inside two minutes through Yussuf Poulsen. They held that lead until half-time, but the arrival off the bench of Kevin de Bruyne shifted momentum. He played in Thorgan Hazard for the equaliser on 54 minutes before firing home the winner on 70.

Belgium had to stay strong as Denmark piled on the pressure late on. Toby, picking up cap 111, made a superb block to deny Martin Braithwaite on 77 minutes and the same player struck the woodwork late on.

The result means Belgium are through to the knockout stage and Denmark will have to beat Russia in their final group match to have any hope of taking one of the four best third-placed teams slots for the last 16. Denmark host that final game on Monday, with Belgium facing Finland at the Gazprom Arena in St Petersburg, both games kick-off at 8pm.
