Internationals – France out of Euro 2020, big win for returning Lo Celso

Tue 29 June 2021, 08:11|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris pulled off a crucial penalty save during France’s 3-3 draw with Switzerland at Euro 2020 on Monday evening, but couldn’t prevent his nation from crashing out of the tournament in the subsequent penalty shootout.

In a thrilling last 16 tie in Bucharest, France captain Hugo stopped the Swiss from taking a potentially decisive 2-0 lead during the 90 minutes when he brilliantly kept out Ricardo Rodriguez’s spot-kick, with Karim Benzema scoring twice soon afterwards to put the world champions in the driving seat.

Paul Pogba curled home a stunning strike for 3-1, but late goals from Haris Seferovic – his second of the game – and Mario Gavranovic dramatically took the match to extra time. It remained 3-3, meaning a penalty shootout was needed to decide who would progress to face Spain in the quarter-finals, with Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer ultimately denying Kylian Mbappe as Switzerland won 5-4.

Moussa Sissoko came on in place of Antoine Griezmann in the 88th minute for his second appearance of the tournament.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Giovani Lo Celso returned to action off the bench to help Argentina clinch top spot in Group A of the Copa America with a thumping 4-1 win over Bolivia in Cuiabá.

The midfielder, who missed last week’s 1-0 win over Paraguay through injury, came on in the 64th minute, shortly before fellow substitute Lautaro Martínez netted Argentina’s fourth goal.

Giovani’s side will now face Ecuador in the quarter-finals in the early hours of Sunday morning, while Davinson Sanchez’s Colombia now know that they’ll be up against Uruguay in the last eight on Saturday night.
