Jose Mourinho praised the ‘positive attitude’ of the players after late goals finally sunk Wycombe in the FA Cup fourth round on Monday evening.
We created chances throughout - 28 efforts at goal, twice struck the woodwork in the first half - but found ourselves 1-0 down to Fred Onyedinma’s strike before Gareth Bale crucially levelled just before half-time.
It was one-way traffic in the second half and we finally broke through five minutes from time when Harry Winks produced a measured, curling finish from 20 yards after another save from home goalkeeper Ryan Allsop. Tanguy Ndombele added the icing on the cake with two fine finishes for the final 4-1 scoreline.
We now travel to Everton in the fifth round - a date has yet to be confirmed, but ties will be played between 9-11 February.
The performance was serious, like we did at Marine, but this is a completely different level
Jose said: “I told the players at half-time, even at 1-1 and possibly down if Bale doesn’t score that goal, I told the players that I couldn’t be critical of them, not of their attitude, not of the way they were playing, we were fine, from minute one, the team was really fine.
“In the first 10 minutes we had chances, corners, hit the post. The performance was serious, like we did at Marine, but this is a completely different level, much higher, but the same positive attitude from the players.
“In the second half, the changes were more about fresh people, fresh, I still stayed with Steven Bergwijn in case we went to extra time, a last push, so we had good ammunition on the bench to try to kill the game, which we did.”
