‘It’s up to us’ - Kane leads from the front at Bramall Lane

Mon 18 January 2021, 12:08|Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday’s performance and 3-1 victory at Sheffield United felt like a statement of intent from the players - and Harry Kane explained why...

“We’ve been disappointed with the way we’ve let points drop over the last four, five weeks and we wanted to make sure we turned that around,” Harry told us moments after the final whistle at Bramall Lane. “It’s up to us as players to go out there and show more aggression, more ambition than the other team, and that’s what we tried to do.”

Harry led from the front as we did just that. Serge Aurier headed home Heung-Min Son’s corner on five minutes and Harry doubled the lead before the break with a clinical strike from 20 yards. Both goals came from us pressing and winning possession. Sonny also struck the post.

As expected, Chris Wilder’s men responded and pulled a goal back from David McGoldrick just before the hour. We responded in style two minutes later as Tanguy Ndombele fashioned an amazing, lobbed finish from Steven Bergwijn’s pass for 3-1, crucially restoring our two-goal advantage.

We had to make sure we went with a high aggression, high ambition and we definitely did that

Victory means we’ve now lost just two of our last 19 matches in all competitions.

“It was an important game for us,” added Harry, who is now up to 207 goals for us in all competitions, just one behind double great Bobby Smith. “We know Sheffield United are fighting for their lives, fighting for points, but so are we.

“I thought in the first half we were outstanding. We pressed really high, made it difficult for them, created chances and in the second half, disappointed to concede, obviously, but after that we didn’t panic, carried on playing, created more chances and in the end it could have been more.

“It was an incredible finish by Tanguy, great ball by Stevie, and a crucial part of the game because we were disappointed to concede and that third goal eased the pressure, a bit of a sucker punch for them. After that we kept it well, moved it, made them run, spaces opened up and maybe we could have scored more but we’re delighted with the three points.”
