Championship opponents in the FA Cup - the last five

Sun 24 January 2021, 12:30|Tottenham Hotspur

We travel to Championship side Wycombe in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday evening (7.45pm). Ahead of the tie at Adams Park, we take a look back at our last five encounters against Championship opposition.

Watford 0-1 Spurs - 27.01.12

Rafa van der Vaart’s 30-yarder late in the first half proved enough as Watford pushed us all the way in this fourth round clash at Vicarage Road. Rafa drilled beyond Scott Loach following a quick break from Kyle Walker. The Dutchman later struck the woodwork, but the home side had the chances to equalise, foiled by a combination of the post, Carlo Cudicini and Michael Dawson, who blocked former Spur Mark Yeates’ goalbound effort late on.

Leeds 2-1 Spurs - 27.01.13

One of only two defeats in 52 to lower league opposition since 1990 (Leicester the other in 2006), Leeds were in the Championship when they toppled us in the fourth round at Elland Road in 2013. Luke Varney got behind us to score early for Leeds, then managed by Neil Warnock. Clint Dempsey, Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale all had chances before Ross McCormack broke from deep again to make it 2-0 five minutes into the second half. Dempsey went close before pulling a goal back on the hour and Academy graduate Jon Obika had a late chance blocked by defender Lee Peltier.

Spurs 2-0 Villa - 08.01.17

Ben Davies marked our final FA Cup campaign at the Lane with his first goal in a Spurs shirt as we struck twice in the final 20 minutes to overcome a stubborn Villa, managed at the time by Steve Bruce. After a quiet first half, we started to carve out chances. Sam Johnstone denied Heung-Min Son, Davies then headed home from GK Nkoudou’s cross on 71 minutes, Johnstone kept out Moussa Sissoko who then teed up Sonny for 2-0 with 10 minutes to go. Wycombe, then in League Two, were next in a 4-3 thriller before our next Championship opposition...

Fulham 0-3 Spurs - 19.02.17

This fifth round tie was all about Harry Kane. Captain on the day at Craven Cottage, the striker bagged his fifth Spurs hat-trick and first in the FA Cup. We dominated from first to last, and may well have scored more but for Marcus Bettinelli in the Fulham goal. Harry slid home from Christian Eriksen’s cross to open the scoring on 16 minutes, the same pair combined again for 2-0 on 51 minutes and Harry completed his day with the third from Dele’s pass on 73. Bettinelli denied Moussa Sissoko, Dele and Heung-Min Son as we notched up 23 efforts at goal.

Spurs 2-1 Middlesbrough - 14.01.20

Led by legendary Spurs pair Jonathan Woodgate and Robbie Keane, Boro pushed us all the way in the third round last season. We had to come from behind to grab a draw in the initial tie at the Riverside, Lucas Moura equalising Ashley Fletcher’s opener. Back on home soil, we took an early grip on the replay thanks to Giovani Lo Celso’s fine strike after Tomas Mejias’ mistake on two minutes and Erik Lamela’s brilliant run and finish on 15. We had the chances to put the issue beyond all doubt, but George Saville gave Boro hope at 2-1 with eight minutes left and Rudy Gestede headed over late on.
