West Ham v Spurs – history, stats and facts

Sat 20 February 2021, 16:18|Tottenham Hotspur

Ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to West Ham (12pm kick-off), we take a look at the key numbers behind the fixture.

History

This will be the 50th meeting in the Premier League between us and West Ham and Jose Mourinho’s 50th Premier League fixture as our Head Coach. Our record against the Hammers in the competition currently stands at: played 49, won 24, drawn 10 and lost 15. We have only won more games against Everton (27) and Manchester City (25) in the Premier League than we have versus West Ham. The Hammers, though, have only won more games in the competition against Southampton (18).

We have won on each of our last three league visits to the London Stadium - our best run of victories in our 67 league trips to east London so far. The last time we took on West Ham in Stratford was Jose’s first game as our Head Coach and that maiden outing ended in victory. Goals from Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane put us into a commanding 3-0 lead at the former Olympic Stadium before goals in the closing moments from West Ham’s Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna made it a tense end to the game. We held on to take all three points though with a 3-2 win.

West Ham boss David Moyes, meanwhile, has never beaten a team managed by Jose Mourinho in 15 attempts in all competitions (that includes 13 Premier League games) – a run that stretches back 16 years.

West Ham’s form

The Hammers have taken 42 points from their 24 league games this season - that is the most they have accumulated at this stage of a top-flight season since 1985/86 and three more than they have at this point in any of their other Premier League campaigns. That tally is also three more points than they collected across the whole of last season (39). They have also won six of their last eight Premier League games - only league leaders Manchester City have won more matches in that period. Meanwhile, the Irons have lost just two of their last 22 games.

Irons flying high

With the Hammers currently occupying fifth place while we sit in ninth, this will be the first meeting between the two clubs since November, 2012, in which our opponents will come into the game in a higher league position than us. On that day, just over eight years ago at White Hart Lane, we earned a 3-1 win over the Hammers - Jermain Defoe scored twice while Gareth Bale was also on target - to move us back ahead of our rivals in the table.

Not since the 2008/09 campaign have we met West Ham in the second half of a season with the Hammers above us in the table. That day, in April, 2009, the Irons arrived at White Hart Lane sitting six points in front of us with nine games to go, but we went on to claim victory that afternoon with Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win. We then went on to finish above the east end outfit later that term on goal difference.

The last season West Ham did finish above us was 2007/08. After just one win in 10 for us at the start of that campaign, manager Martin Jol was replaced by Juande Ramos. We went onto finish 11th that term, three points and a place behind West Ham, but we did pick up silverware that season as we lifted the League Cup at Wembley in February, 2008.

Harry hammering home

Harry Kane has scored 11 Premier League goals against West Ham - only Wayne Rooney (14) and Michael Owen (13) have scored more against the Hammers. Meanwhile, only against Leicester (14) has Harry scored more Premier League goals than against the men in claret and blue. Our number 10’s prolific strike partner Heung-Min Son also has a strong record against the Irons with the South Korean international having been involved in six goals in his last five  (3 goals, 3 assists). From a defensive perspective, Hugo Lloris goes into this game on 99 Premier League clean sheets - he would be just the 16th goalkeeper in Premier League history to reach 100 shutouts if we were to keep West Ham at bay on Sunday.
