Man City v Spurs - history, stats and facts

Tottenham Hotspur
We return to Premier League action this evening as we make the trip to table topping Manchester City (5.30pm kick-off).
Ahead of the clash at the Etihad Stadium, we take a look at the history and recent key moments in this fixture, some of the standout statistics surrounding the game as well as a look at our opposition's recent form.
History
We first made the trip to Manchester City 112 years ago and came away with victory. Visiting their then-home of Hyde Road in January, 1909, for an FA Cup first round tie, we earned a 4-3 triumph to progress to the next stage. That was our only win on our travels to City over the following 43 years as it wasn’t until August, 1952, that we earned our first away league win against the Sky Blues - and that came at their historic former home of Maine Road.
Between 1992 and 2010, we went on a run of 12 victories in just 17 visits to City. Incredibly across that period, in 13 Premier League trips to face the Sky Blues we lost just twice, while we took all three points on nine occasions. Since the last victory in that run though - our famous 1-0 triumph in May, 2010, which sent us into the Champions League for the first time - we have defeated City on their own turf just once. That victory was almost five years ago to the day - Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen were on target to secure a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium. On our most recent trip, which came back in August, 2019, goals from Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura earned a 2-2 draw.
Jose 2-0 City
Since taking charge of our first team back in November, 2019, Jose Mourinho has faced Manchester City twice and, on both occasions, we have taken all three points with 2-0 wins. First, in February, 2020, a stunning debut strike from Steven Bergwijn set us on our way against the Citizens before Heung-Min Son wrapped up victory with a fine finish. Then, in November, it was once again a 2-0 win under Jose as we defeated City to return to the top of the Premier League table. Like nine months earlier, Sonny was again on hand to find the back of the net against Pep Guardiola’s men as he opened the scoring before Giovani Lo Celso scored his first-ever Premier League goal to seal maximum points. Both of those victories came at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Sonny’s City strikes
As aforementioned, in both of our last two meetings with Manchester City, Heung-Min Son has been on target. However, the South Korean’s goalscoring exploits against the Citizens go much further back than that. It may have taken him three games to register against City in his Spurs career, but since scoring against the Sky Blues for the first time in a 2-2 draw in January, 2017 - coincidentally, assisted by Harry Kane - Sonny has gone on to score six times in his last eight appearances against them.
In all three of our games against the Citizens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, our number seven has found the back of the net. Meanwhile, he has scored three goals in his last four appearances at the Etihad Stadium.
Winning away in Manchester
We could become the first team in 11 seasons to defeat both Manchester United and Manchester City on their own turf in the same campaign with victory at the Etihad tonight. Not since Liverpool in 2008/09 has a team managed that feat. No London team has managed it in the history of the Premier League while, the last time we recorded such a success in Manchester came in the 1959/60 season. Having already defeated City 2-0 earlier in the campaign in N17, a victory at the Etihad this evening would also make it the first time we have completed the double over the Citizens since the 2015/16 season.
City in form
Since we defeated Manchester City 2-0 in November, the Citizens have been on an incredible run of form as they are now unbeaten in their last 22 games in all competitions. After progressing past Championship outfit Swansea City with a 3-1 triumph in the FA Cup on Wednesday, it is now 15 wins on a trot in all competitions for Pep Guardiola's men - a new record for a top-flight in English football. In the league, they haven’t trailed for a single minute since their defeat to us in November. They have won 12 and drawn two of their 14 league games in that period, collecting 38 points.
Jose v Guardiola
Despite winning just three of his first 17 matches against Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho has lost just two of his last seven such games, winning four - including both of his games against Guardiola as our Head Coach. This evening, he could become the first manager to win three away games against the Spanish coach. It will also be the 25th meeting of the two managers.
A ton-up for Hugo?
If Club captain Hugo Lloris is selected to start this evening and keeps a clean sheet, it will be shutout number 100 for the goalkeeper in the Premier League. Only 15 ‘keepers have reached that milestone in the competition’s history, and two have worn our colours - Brad Friedel (132) and Joe Hart (127).
