Nuno Espirito Santo spoke of his pride in the team’s performance as he walked away from an emotional return to Molineux with three points on Sunday.

Nuno knows better than most what a tough task it is to take anything from this famous old stadium after his four years at the helm, and the players delivered thanks to a near faultless defensive display under relentless pressure from the home side.

That desire was illustrated perfectly by Dele, who won and then slotted home the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on 10 minutes – 70 minutes later, he threw himself in to block Francisco Trincao’s thunderous volley, just one example of the team’s determination to keep a clean sheet on Hugo Lloris’ record 300th Premier League appearance for us and take victory.

I’m very proud of the team because we went until the end. We knew it was going to be a hard task and the boys did amazing

Nuno gave a nod to Dele, and Hugo, afterwards. “Yes, this action of Dele, and the actions of many more,” he said. “We defended well against a tough team that can cause problems, but in the final situations we managed to keep a clean sheet, Hugo did amazing, the boys did amazing, hard work.

“We had the chance to kill the game, we didn’t do it, and then it’s until the last minutes bodies in front of the ball to take what we came here for.

“You have to stay concentrated. Molineux is a tough place. We started well, good dynamics, but then we lost a little control. They are relentless, but we showed more, I think. I’m very proud of the team because we went until the end. We knew it was going to be a hard task and the boys did amazing.

“We are trying to be solid, compact and the good games will come, the good situations will come.”

As for his return to Molineux, Nuno added: “It was an emotional day, of course. It was a long time, four years, and there is only love and respect I have for this club.”
