Internationals – Winks helps England to victory

Thu 12 November 2020, 22:14|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Winks and Matt Doherty lined up on opposite sides as England claimed a 3-0 win over Republic of Ireland in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday evening.

Harry completed the full game in central midfield for the Three Lions and supplied the cross from which Manchester United defender Harry Maguire headed them in front after 18 minutes.

Matt also played the full 90 minutes for Ireland, albeit in the left-back position.

Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (penalty) rounded off the scoring for England, for whom Harry Kane and Eric Dier were unused substitutes.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Joe Rodon came on as a 69th-minute substitute for Wales as they battled out an uneventful goalless draw with USA in a friendly at the defender’s former home of Swansea’s Liberty Stadium. Ben Davies was an unused substitute, but Gareth Bale wasn’t in the matchday squad.

Serge Aurier, meanwhile, captained Ivory Coast to a 2-1 home win over Madagascar in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. The start of the game at the new Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan was delayed by heavy rain, but once it did get underway, Serge completed the full 90 minutes as his side moved to the top of Group K, level on points with their opponents on Thursday.

Gedson Fernandes was ever-present for Portugal Under-21s as they secured a 3-0 home victory over Belarus in their European Under-21 Championship qualifier.

Wednesday’s action was centred around friendlies. Moussa Sissoko played all 90 minutes of France’s 2-0 home defeat to Finland – Hugo Lloris wasn’t in the squad for Les Bleus – while Sergio Reguilon had to come on as a first-half substitute for the injured José Luis Gayà in Spain’s 1-1 draw away to the Netherlands. Toby Alderweireld wasn’t in Belgium’s matchday squad as they won 2-1 at home to Switzerland.
