Internationals – Hugo makes Spurs history as France beat Portugal

Sun 15 November 2020, 08:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris became the Club’s all-time most-capped player at international level as he led France to a 1-0 victory in Portugal on Saturday night.

Goalkeeper and captain of club and country, Hugo has now won 81 international caps since becoming a Spurs player in 2012, taking him ahead of Jan Vertonghen’s 80 caps for Belgium during his time with us. Jan overtook Pat Jennings’ previous record of 75 appearances for Northern Ireland as a Spur in June, 2019.

Hugo, who has well over 100 caps for his country across his whole playing career, completed the full match in Lisbon as Les Bleus went top of UEFA Nations League Group A3 with one game remaining and became the first team to qualify for the tournament finals, N’Golo Kante bagging the winner in the second half. Moussa Sissoko was an unused substitute for France.

Elsewhere in the same competition on Saturday, Sergio Reguilon played 90 minutes at left-back for Spain and provided the assist for their late equaliser in Switzerland, the match ending 1-1.

In friendly action, Heung-Min Son captained South Korea and supplied the assist for their opening goal in an eventual 3-2 friendly defeat to Mexico in Austria. He played the full game.

Friday’s action saw Giovani Lo Celso, having come on as a first-half substitute, provide the assist for Argentina’s goal in their 1-1 home draw with Paraguay in FIFA World Cup qualifying in the early hours of the morning. Davinson Sanchez didn’t feature in Colombia’s 3-0 home defeat by Uruguay later that day.

On-loan Oliver Skipp, meanwhile, was an unused substitute for England Under-21s as they beat Andorra 3-1 at Molineux in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier on Friday.
