Club and players spread kindness throughout MHAW

Sat 23 May 2020, 10:00|Tottenham Hotspur

During Mental Health Awareness Week, the Club and its players have delivered daily acts of kindness for some of our most deserving fans.

Our #ToCareIsToDo campaign on social saw Hugo Lloris, Erik Lamela, Ryan Sessegnon, Lucas Moura and Harry Winks all get involved.

Mental Health Awareness Week aims to drive the nationwide conversation on mental health to create lasting change, with this year’s theme being kindness.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, ‘kindness strengthens relationships, develops community and deepens solidarity. It is a cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health. Wisdom from every culture across history recognises that kindness is something that all human beings need to experience and practice to be fully alive.’

During these uncertain times, acts of kindness and supporting the mental health of both ourselves and those around us have never been more important.

Hugo and Harry

Our support of the campaign kicked off with captain Hugo sending a pair of his gloves to 10-year-old fan Harry, himself a goalkeeper who, in response to the disappointment of his own football season coming to a premature end, has been collecting donations for local food banks, organised by his Scout group.

Erik and Finley

Finley had been looking forward to celebrating his 12th birthday with a visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a behind-the-scenes tour. With those highly-anticipated plans ruined, Erik Lamela chose to put a smile on the young fan’s face by sending him a pair of his boots.

Ryan and Freddie

We’ve seen fans young and old do what they can during this pandemic to raise funds for the NHS. Although by his own admission not a keen jogger, young Freddie has been so inspired by his Nan, Lynda, who works within intensive care, that he set about running a mile a day to raise £50 for the NHS. With his current fundraising total standing at an incredible £2,960, it’s safe to say Freddie has done himself and his Nan proud and was more than deserving of a pair of Ryan Sessegnon’s boots on Day 3.

Lucas and Lucas!

Lucas Newton, aged 12, has been going through a particularly tough time during lockdown having been house-bound due to his recent chemotherapy. To make matters worse, he’s been separated from best buddy Oliver, who has also been undergoing cancer treatment. Nonetheless, the football-mad friends have been using technology to stay in touch with games of virtual keepy-ups and who better to further lift spirits for Spurs fan Lucas than his very own namesake…Lucas Moura! A pair of the Brazilian ace’s boots are on their way to Bury St Edmunds.

Harry and Matthew

To round off the week, Harry Winks was the latest player to delve into his kit bag and send a pair of boots to 12-year-old Matthew. It’s been a tough time for the Junior Member, with his grandad suddenly passing away and his mother, who had herself recently suffered a stroke, testing positive for coronavirus. We hope this special gift from Harry went some way to putting a smile on Matthew’s face again.

Within our local community, school children have been writing letters to elderly neighbours currently in isolation. Our Foundation team has been delivering the letters during Mental Health Awareness Week and ensuring they brighten up the days of their recipients.

By using the hashtag #ToCareIsToDo, we’ve also been able to see examples of fans taking part in their own acts of kindness during Mental Health Awareness Week and beyond.

One fan who stood out for us was David Killick who has been gifting care packages to elderly neighbours over the past month, including essentials such as bread, milk, tea and biscuits, as well as the occasional magazine or puzzle to keep the mind active, and even the odd bunch of flowers.

His original fundraising target of £300 was quickly surpassed and he is now on course for his new target of £1,000, which you can help David reach via the link below.

We’d like to thank all our fans out there delivering acts of kindness every day – it goes a long way to help us all get through these tough times.
