'Explosive, technical, a big talent' - Dutch view on Bergwijn

Thu 30 January 2020, 11:45|Tottenham Hotspur

Mike Verweij is back! A hugely-respected sports writer on the largest national newspaper in Holland, De Telegraaf, and a regular contributor on all things Dutch here on tottenhamhotspur.com, Mike has given us his insight into our new signing from PSV, Steven Bergwijn.

Mike Verweij, De Telegraaf on Steven Bergwijn

"We think Steven Bergwijn is one of the biggest talents in Holland. He’s already a Dutch international, a player in the team of Ronald Koeman and he played an important role in the qualification for Euro 2020. As you all know, the Dutch national team missed qualification for Euro 2016 and the World Cup of 2018.

"Bergwijn is one of the players we call, and the Dutch football association call, ‘the new wave’. We expect a lot. We thought Steven might wait until after Euro 2020, but he has already made a big, big transfer to Spurs. We are very happy that another Dutch player is going to Spurs again.

"It’s really strange to say it for a PSV player, but Bergwijn looks like a typical Ajax player. But it’s not so strange, because he played in the youngest youth teams at Ajax and then moved to PSV (at 13). He’s a really explosive player, but not only fast, also really technical. He has a great ability to score goals. He’s a player that everyone would want in their team.

"If you talk to him outside the pitch, he’s a really quiet, shy guy. On the pitch, he says what Justin Kliuvert (ex-Ajax, now at AS Roma) also said, ‘I’m really good at playing football and that’s what I want to do’. I believe he’s a really big talent.

"I would like to say one thing because of the situation last Sunday, it looked like Steven was a troublemaker. We all know in Holland that he’s everything but a troublemaker. There were problems in communication. Steven, I think, is a real professional and he would never make any trouble, so let the Spurs fans know - he’s everything but a troublemaker."
