Heung-Min Son wins The FIFA Puskas Award

Thu 17 December 2020, 18:52|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son’s wonder goal against Burnley has won The FIFA Puskas Award for best goal at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2020.

The South Korean star made it into the final three from a shortlist of 11, and then beat Luis Suarez, his goal for Barcelona, now with Athletico Madrid, and Giorgian de Arrascaeta of Brazilian side Flamengo to the prize, announced remotely at FIFA’s virtual ceremony this evening. It’s the first time a Spurs player has picked up a FIFA award.

Sonny's goal - all angles

Sonny’s stunner came in a 5-0 win against the Clarets in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 7 December, 2019.

He collected the ball just outside our penalty area with 30.55 on the clock. His initial burst took him away from Robbie Brady and James Tarkowski and a jink right left Dwight McNeil in his wake. Now running at full speed, Sonny glided past Erik Pieters and sprinted into the box. Matthew Lowton couldn’t catch him, Ben Mee couldn’t get over to cover and as Nick Pope came out, Sonny steadied himself and slotted home from the penalty spot, 31.07 on the clock - 12 seconds of magic, start to finish.

Here is how Sonny described it at the time. “I saw Dele running on the left, and many players from Burnley," he said. "I tried to pass first of all to Dele, he was open but the right-back followed him and it was impossible to pass to him, so I just thought ‘shall I go?’ and put my booster on.

“It was the right timing to put the booster on! After two or three seconds I was in front of goal, really surprised and especially when you score this kind of goal at home it makes me so proud.”

Speaking after winning the Puskas Award this evening, Sonny, typically modest, said: “After I scored the goal, I didn’t realise it was such an amazing goal. As soon as I realised after the game when I watched it again, I was thinking, ‘wow, this was something special’.

“During the game, you are focussed, after the game I was so surprised that I was so far away, so many people around me… it was an amazing feeling.”
