European stats update - Sonny up to fourth on all-time scoring list

Thu 24 October 2019, 15:10|Tottenham Hotspur

Heung-Min Son has moved up to fourth place in our all-time European goalscoring list after his double against Crvena zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) on Tuesday night.

Sonny sparkled again on the main stage - he struck twice before half-time on our way to a Club record 5-0 win against the Serbian champions in Champions League Group B.

That took him up to 15 goals in Europe and ahead of legendary former strikers Mark Falco, Alan Gilzean and Martin Peters, all on 13.

"I’m happy for that," said Sonny. "I said before, to catch Harry Kane is almost impossible because he scores in every game! I'm really honoured to score these goals and really grateful for my team-mates, the staff, the fans and what can I say? I just want to score more goals with this Club, for this shirt. I always try to do my best with positive energy."

Sonny's next target will be Martin Chivers, currently third on 22 goals. UEFA Cup winner Martin's 22 goals stood for almost 30 years (1974-2013) before being overtaken by Jermain Defoe. They have since been surpassed by Harry Kane, who took his total to 28 with another two against Red Star.

Erik Lamela, also on target, moved up to 11 goals. Erik, Sonny and Harry are three of only 10 players to score 10-plus goals for us in European competition.

European appearances - Jan up to third

Jan Vertonghen made his 56th appearance for us in Europe when he started against Crvena zvezda on Tuesday night. He is now joint-third with Hugo Lloris and closing in on Aaron Lennon (58).

Harry Kane is up to 53 with Christian Eriksen (48), Erik Lamela (39), Ben Davies (38) and Heung-Min Son (37) all in the Club's top 10 appearance-makers in European competition.

Legendary former skipper Steve Perryman - twice UEFA Cup winner - remains top of the list with 64 appearances.

To date, we've had 223 appearances in European competition - European Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup, UEFA Cup and Champions League. Our first European tie was against Polish side Gornik Zabrze in the European Cup in Gornik on 13 September, 1961. Bill Nicholson's double-winners lost that match 4-1 but famously won the return 8-1 at the Lane. We reached the semi-final in that first season in Europe.

We won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963, becoming the first British team to lift a European trophy. We made history again by lifting the inaugural UEFA Cup in 1972 - the first team to win two different European trophies.
