Lucas Moura: “Every time I watch the replay, I cry”

Fri 10 May 2019, 16:42|Tottenham Hotspur

It wasn’t quite the morning after the night before, more like 40 hours after the night of our lives. Spurs fans are in Champions League dreamland and the player whose goals sent us all there is still coming to terms with what he and the team achieved that night in Amsterdam.

We hardly need a recall, but let’s do it anyway. Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, we found ourselves 2-0 down on the night at half-time at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, 3-0 down on aggregate. That was still the case with 35 minutes left to play but then Lucas struck, First goal, 55 minutes, 3-1 on aggregate. Second goal, 59 minutes, 3-2 on aggregate.

You know the rest. Moussa Sissoko’s ‘Hail Mary’ forward, Fernando Llorente’s flick, Dele’s exquisite touch and Lucas onto it in a flash with a low strike into the corner. Pandemonium. We’re in the Champions League Final against Liverpool in Madrid on 1 June.

Every player wanted to have this moment, to live this moment, I am so happy and we need to enjoy it

“I think that I’m dreaming!” smiled Lucas after training back at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon. “It was an unbelievable day. I’m very happy, very proud. I always say that when you believe and when you work hard, you receive good things and this group and this team deserves it.

"I believed that it was possible to win the game and to go to the final but I couldn’t believe that I would score three goals and the third one in the last seconds. It was perfect.

“I’ve watched the game back. Every time that I watch the video I cry because it’s so emotional. It’s a good moment for us. Every player wanted to have this moment, to live this moment, I am so happy and we need to enjoy it.

“That’s what football does with everyone. That’s why football is so amazing. I love football. It’s unbelievable, it’s so emotional, everyone loves football, moments like this we need to keep for life.”
