Champions League moments - that moment!

Fri 31 May 2019, 10:15|Tottenham Hotspur

We conclude our series of Champions League moments with the moment, the moment that sent Spurs fans everywhere into raptures, the moment that took us to Madrid.

Drawing 2-2 on the night in the semi-final, second leg at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, time running out, we needed one more goal to beat Ajax 3-2 and progress to the final on away goals.

Then, with seconds left, Ben Davies beat Hakim Ziyech in a 50/50 on halfway, Heung-Min Son played the ball back to Moussa Sissoko, he clipped the ball up to the edge of the box, Fernando Llorente beat Matthijs de Ligt in the air, Dele got onto the knock down and touched the ball into the path of Lucas Moura and, well, you know the rest...

Mauricio Pochettino

"There are no words to describe that emotion. I can only cry again. It’s impossible to describe it, a magic moment. There are a lot of people who empathise with us. It was an emotional moment. It happens to me when I am watching games, finals, it happened in the past and you empathise with your heroes when they show emotion. That’s what happened, all around the world. It was an amazing night."

Lucas Moura

"I think I’ve watched the video 200 times! It’s difficult to explain. I believed until the last second. We had 30 minutes, then 20, then 10 and we don’t score. I was nervous. Five minutes extra time. That last ball, I knew it was the last seconds. I wanted to be near the box because if the ball came to me, I would try to do something. When I shot, I didn’t care about the defender, anything. When I saw it was a goal, it was amazing. I didn’t know what to feel, what to do, how to celebrate. Everyone came over to me, I saw the players on the bench, it was so crazy. I can remember everything. I ran, I jumped, then everyone came over. I said ‘it’s finished’. It’s like a movie, like a dream, but it’s real. Amazing. I don’t have the words to explain. I’m so proud of my team-mates, my friends here. We deserved it. It was so difficult. Maybe a few people believed in us, but now we go to play the final of the Champions League. It’s a dream for every player. For sure, the most emotional game of my life."

Moussa Sissoko

"All I had in my mind at the moment was to put the ball in the box because I knew there were only a few seconds left. At the same time, I knew I couldn’t go too far because it would be easy for the goalkeeper to come out and claim it. I also know Fernando is one of the best headers of the ball in the team, he could win the challenge. I put the ball in a good area, not too much power but in the air, just outside the box, Fernando won it, deflected the ball, Dele touched it on and Lucas came running through to score. That’s how we finished the game. It was an unbelievable feeling. I was just looking and hoping for a goal. As soon as Lucas scored I ran over to him in the corner. It was a special moment. You can win games, but when you reach the final of the Champions League like that, that’s amazing. That feeling, you can’t explain."

Fernando Llorente

"I was just thinking that we would have one more chance, one more opportunity. I had faith that we could do it. I tried to win the ball from Moussa, it was difficult, de Ligt is strong, but the ball was perfect for Dele, he put the ball through to Lucas and, unbelievable, the goal that made everyone crazy. We couldn’t believe it. At half-time, everyone was thinking the semi-final was over, no? We did it. We came into the second half to leave everything there, to fight for the final, to get our rewards. I felt very strong. I wanted to take every ball and help the team to put Ajax under pressure. It was difficult from the beginning in both games, but with some balls (forward), they suffered a lot with me. From that, we got more opportunities."

Hugo Lloris

"It’s one of the best moments in my career in terms of emotions. To be 2-0 down, 3-0 with the first leg, to come back and win the game in the last seconds is unreal. It’s difficult to control yourself because you live the game 100% in terms of emotion, in terms of the high level demands of concentration and in that moment you forget about everything and you just want to go to celebrate. It’s just amazing and to see the Spurs fans up there celebrating, even for them it must have been difficult to believe there was any chance at half-time but we made it and we can be proud of that."

Ben Davies

"The ball was bouncing around, I went in for a tackle on halfway, Moussa knocked the second ball up and prayed for something to happen, Fernando got to it, Dele’s pass is perfect into Lucas’ path and at that point, I just thought ‘target, target’ and it went in so slowly. I didn’t know what to think. It was unbelievable. It was a reward for all our hard work. The way we did it... frightening. As I said, players standing up to be counted. Lucas has come in and delivered every time he’s played, he’s been top, top drawer and that couldn’t have happened to a nicer bloke."

Harry Kane

“It was a crazy whirlwind of emotions. I was sitting with Davinson Sanchez and suggested we started to head down to the changing room to be with the lads – just as Moussa kicked the ball up in the air. That got flicked on, Dele flicked it around the corner and from where we were sitting in the stadium it was right in line, so as soon as Lucas shot, we knew it was going in. The emotions were mad. We jumped up and sprinted down to the tunnel. When the final whistle went we all ran onto the pitch, I ran and celebrated and just wanted to be with the team. It was great for everyone involved, players, staff, the fans, it was a special night.”

Harry Winks

"I’d just come back from my operation, so I couldn’t travel out to Amsterdam. I was working on my rehabilitation and getting myself right. Everyone played so well, especially in the second half, everyone gave everything and it was just incredible. After Jan hit the crossbar you begin to think ‘is this it?’ but when the third goal went in, I was up, jumping. Even though I wasn’t there, I felt like I was with them, jumping up and down in my living room. It’s a difficult situation, watching on TV from home, one of the toughest times of the season for me because I would have loved to have been out there, but I knew I couldn’t. The most important thing is that we got through. What a performance!"
