'We want more' - Lloris, Kane, Dier post-Dortmund

Wed 06 March 2019, 13:10|Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris underlined the ambition of the squad after reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, stating: “We don’t want to stop at this stage.”

Our captain and goalkeeper was inspired as we weathered the expected storm against Borussia Dortmund in our Round of 16, second leg before scoring the only goal of the game to progress 4-0 on aggregate against the Bundesliga leaders.

It’s the third time we’ve reached the last eight of the competition having made it to the semi-finals of what was then the European Cup in 1961/62 and then the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2010/11.

As we led 3-0 from the first leg at Wembley, BVB were always going to come at us with everything in the first half. Hugo made three outstanding saves, the best a tip over to deny Mario Gotze as we stood firm. Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies weighed in with crucial blocks as we stayed organised to keep it 0-0 at half-time.

Harry Kane then took the wind out of BVB’s sails with the crucial away goal, latching onto Moussa Sissoko’s pass before firing past Roman Burki. That made Harry our all-time top European goalscorer on 24 goals and ultimately ended the tie.

We all want to compete against the best teams... everything is possible if you believe and have the right mentality

Hugo Lloris

Now we wait for the draw for both the quarter-finals and semi-finals on 15 March.

Hugo said: “It’s fantastic, but we are ambitious, we want to play in this competition 100 per cent and we will see. The important thing is to keep the belief and be ready to push to our limits.

“We don’t want to stop at this stage. We all want to compete against the best teams. The main thing is to get the top four again (in the Premier League) to qualify the Club for the fourth time in a row in the Champions League and then to enjoy this competition.

“Everything is possible if you believe and have the right mentality. We have already proved last season against Real Madrid and Dortmund, this season against Inter or Barca away, that we are ready to compete, then you need a little luck and team spirit.

“Now is the moment to enjoy and then keep the focus because Saturday is a very important game in the Premier League at Southampton.”

We always want more and that’s our mentality, always. It's a special night. I was just delighted to be back and part of it

Eric Dier

Eric Dier returned to action off the bench 10 minutes into the second half after a recent bout of Tonsillitis and played his part as we took the sting out of the game.

He said: “We always want more and that’s our mentality, always. We’ve got to this point as a team because of our competitiveness individually and as a collective and now we want to win the next game, which is Southampton (on Saturday), the game after that and then the quarter-final when it arrives.

“We just have to keep fighting, keep working hard as a team, improving and hopefully we can do that. I was just delighted to be back and to be part of it.”

It’s a massive achievement for the Club and we should be very proud. We want to keep pushing

Harry Kane

Meanwhile, goalscorer Harry described the victory as ‘a special moment’ and again was quick to look forward.

He added: “It’s a massive achievement for the Club and we should be very proud. We want to keep pushing. As professional athletes we want to keep getting better. That’s what the gaffer will tell us and that’s what we’ve got to try to do.

“We’ll see who we get in the quarter-finals. Nights like tonight and obviously the performance in the home leg will only give us confidence going forward.”
