Club celebrates Chinese New Year

Fri 01 February 2019, 12:07|Tottenham Hotspur

Our players will wear special-edition warm-up shirts ahead of Saturday’s game against Newcastle as we begin our annual Chinese New Year celebrations.

The Club has an estimated following of 45 million in China as interest in the Premier League continues to grow – our Chinese social media channels are among the most popular in European football.

Shanghai Spurs Supporters’ Club are hosting a viewing party to watch the fixture which airs at 8.30pm local time and our mascot, Chirpy, will be out and about in China throughout the festival period visiting families and surprising fans.

To mark the Year of the Pig, the Club has also launched a series of fun and interactive Chinese New Year-themed games integrated into the WeChat app for our Chinese fans.

We deliver a groundbreaking football coaching programme across Asia in partnership with AIA, our Global Principal Partner. The programme sees two fully-qualified members of our Global Football Development coaching team based permanently in Asia to work with players of all levels, nurturing local talent and promoting AIA’s initiative to encourage healthier, longer, better lives.

On Tuesday 5 February, New Year’s Day in China, our coaches are organising an additional session for 40 children in Hong Kong who will all wear the special-edition Chinese New Year warm-up shirts.

We also provide sporting opportunities to underprivileged young people across rural areas of China as part of the AIA China Youth Football Development Project and, more recently, have worked with the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation on a series of football and cultural projects in the UK and China.
