Mauricio Pochettino believes Tuesday’s result highlighted the fine margins between winning and losing as we felt the heat against Inter in the San Siro.

Christian Eriksen’s deflected strike put us in the driving seat and we had chances to add to our lead on a humid night in Milan.

But a fine strike from Mauro Icardi with five minutes to go changed the whole complexion of our Champions League Group B opener and it was Matias Vecino who left us hot under the collar when he snatched what had seemed just moments earlier like an unlikely victory in stoppage time.

“I think we deserved more,” said Mauricio as he mulled over what might have been. “The team played so well, I am happy with their performance and their character but, of course, disappointed with the result.

When we conceded the draw, they changed completely and it was a different game in the last few minutes.

“We created some chances (after Christian’s goal) and we didn’t score. When you don’t score and don’t kill the game when it’s only 1-0, the game is open.

“That is why it’s so thin, the line, and always you need to be focused. For different reasons, we could not keep our result. Against Watford it was the same and, of course, today we repeated the same mistake.”

We must now take on Barcelona on matchday two with no points on the board, but Mauricio is remaining calm.

“We were much better than Inter. In the last few minutes when we conceded the draw, they changed completely and it was a different game in the last few minutes,” he added.

“But of course, we stay positive. It will be tough to play against Barcelona but we need to win, we need to try to give our best, but first of all we have Brighton on Saturday.”
