Legends victorious in Cambridgeshire

Houghton & Wyton Vets 1-3 Spurs Legends

Tue 11 September 2018, 15:41|Tottenham Hotspur

Paul McVeigh and David Howells were on target as the Spurs Legends side came back from a goal down to win 3-1 against Houghton & Wyton Vets in Cambridgeshire on Sunday.

The game, held at St Ives Town, got off to a slow start with Houghton & Wyton squandering a couple of early opportunities to take the lead, while McVeigh and Mark Falco were off-target in the Legends’ best chances of a goalless first half.

It was Houghton & Wyton who found the breakthrough three minutes after the interval as Graeme Thackray evaded the centre-back duo of Stuart Nethercott and Justin Edinburgh before steering beyond goalkeeper Gareth Howells at his near post.

That sparked the Legends into life and McVeigh levelled two minutes later, tapping a square ball into the empty net as the hosts’ defensive line was caught too high.

Six minutes after that, the game had been turned on its head as a great ball down the left from Falco was well controlled and expertly finished by McVeigh.

David Howells made sure of the win with a tidy finish beyond goalkeeper Paul Miles after good interplay between Glen Southam and McVeigh mid-way through the second half.

Former midfielder Jeff Minton, who featured for our first team in 1992, was included in the Legends side for the first time.

The Legends are back in action on Sunday 23 September at Codicote FC, Bury Lane, Codicote, Hertfordshire, SG4 8XY. Kick-off will be at 2pm.
