Italian football expert Adam Digby previews Inter

Tue 27 November 2018, 11:37|Tottenham Hotspur

Inter's win against us in the San Siro on Matchday One of the Champions League back in September sparked a run of seven straight wins in Serie A. For the latest on their form and an insight into how they might approach this key encounter at Wembley on Wednesday night, we turned to Italian football expert Adam Digby for our latest 'Preview from the Press Box'.

Adam is an Italian football writer for FourFourTwo, Bleacher Report and more - and the author of 'Juventus: A History In Black & White'.

Inter’s form

Adam: "The Nerazzurri will arrive at Wembley after Saturday’s clash with Frosinone, and their 3-0 win over the Serie A minnows was the first after a disastrous trip to Atalanta before the international break. That game saw Inter - with a heavily rotated lineup following their 1-1 Champions League draw with Barcelona - torn apart, the Bergamo-based club romping to a well-deserved 4-1 victory.

"That the scoreline could’ve been even higher only serves to underline the lack of options available to Luciano Spalletti, but the Coach is expected to name a full strength XI v Spurs. Before the Atalanta game, Inter had won seven consecutive league games, and their 2-1 victory over Tottenham at San Siro underlines just how dangerous they can be."

Inter’s key man

Adam: "There is little doubt that Mauro Icardi remains the most important player in an Inter shirt, the club Captain once again leading the way with his play as the focal point of the team. The 25-year-old has already got seven league goals to his name, adding three more in the Champions League which includes a strike against Spurs and a late equaliser in the clash with his former club Barca.

"A deadly poacher in the penalty area, Icardi rarely contributes to the build up play, lulling defenders to sleep before a burst of pace puts him in exactly the right position to grab yet another goal. The Tottenham backline will certainly be tested by his approach, and maintaining concentration is essential if he is to be nullified."

Inter's approach

Adam: "While Spalletti has chopped and changed in domestic action, he has maintained a policy of playing his best side in the Champions League. That undoubtedly means Inter will line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation at Wembley, wingers Matteo Politano and Ivan Perisic joining Radja Nainggolan behind lone striker Icardi.

"Two holding midfielders - likely Matias Vecino and the more creative Marcelo Brozovic - will look to get the ball to the forwards while protecting an impressive backline that boasts Milan Skriniar and World Cup finalist Sime Vrsaljko.

"The presence of Nainggolan in an advanced role helps their pressing game and Inter will look to keep the game in the opposition half, while the pace of Perisic is their key weapon in sparking counter attacks."

Key area

Adam: "In a game where two high-powered attacks go head-to-head, it is often the case that whichever defence steps up the most will deliver success. That is likely to continue in this game as Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij look to marshall Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld seeks to keep Icardi quiet.

"The same is true in wide areas, where the full-backs will have a key role to play and Inter’s results have often been decided in this department. If Kwadwo Asamoah and Vrsaljko are on song, the Nerazzurri are incredibly tough to beat, but if Spurs can unlock either flank, that is sure to lead to success."

Prediction

Adam: "I expect another closely fought contest, but find it hard to imagine Inter coming away from London with all three points given their current form. A score draw or a one-goal victory for Spurs would be my expectation going into this clash."
