'Fearless, explosive, modest' - what makes Hugo tick, by Michel Vorm

It’s approaching four years that Michel Vorm has worked alongside Hugo Lloris, day in, day out, honing their goalkeeping skills with coach Toni Jimenez, all three perfectionists of their profession. As Hugo celebrates reaching 100 caps for France this week, who better than ‘Mich’ to explain just what makes the Spurs and France captain tick? Here’s what he had to say...

“First of all it’s his dedication and the way he works. Hugo is so competitive. He always asks so much from himself, always looks to be better, always wants more. Always. In football, mentality is so important. You can have the talent but that’s not everything. Hugo’s work ethic is one of his big qualities.
“In terms of goalkeeping it’s his reactions, he’s explosive, fearless. His physique is perfect, in my opinion, he’s not too big, not too small, very athletic...and he’s hardly ever injured. He has all the ingredients and combine that with his mentality and you have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
“He challenges himself at the training centre every day with myself and Toni (Jimenez, coach). I’ve seen him grow under Mauricio Pochettino and his staff. I’ve been at the Club for the same time as them. I also think I get the best out of him.
“I know he appreciates what myself and Paulo (Gazzaniga) do for him. Maybe people don’t see that from the outside, but we know ourselves and how well we all work together. We are competitors, professionals, team-mates and friends and that’s been the case since I came into the Club in 2014.
“Hugo is our captain, he’s captain of France. He’s played so many games and people perhaps underestimate how tough that is at this level week in, week out, on top of being captain of club and country, with all the pressures you get anyway as a goalkeeper. For 11 months, it’s one game to the next. That’s not easy and mentally, he’s so strong.
“Also, he’s so modest. All he cares about is playing well and achieving with his team and his country. He’s such a humble, nice guy, and one of the best in the business.
“Congratulations on your 100 caps, Hugo. You deserve it.”
