Youngsters learn International Cup opponents

Mon 16 July 2018, 12:32|Tottenham Hotspur

Our Development Squad have been drawn alongside Norwich City, Athletic Club Bilbao and VfL Wolfsburg in Group C of the 2018/19 Premier League International Cup.

This will be the third time we have entered the competition, which gives young players the chance to test themselves against some of the best Under-23 sides from across Europe.

The International Cup is split into six groups, with two English clubs and two invited European teams in each. Teams play each other once in the group stage with all matches hosted in England.

The group winners and the two best runners-up across the six groups progress to the quarter-finals. All knockout matches are one-off ties and decided by extra time and penalties if required.

Exact fixture dates will be confirmed at a later stage.

2018/19 Premier League International Cup

Group A: Southampton, West Ham United, Porto, Dinamo Zagreb

Group B: Leicester City, Reading, Sparta Prague, Feyenoord

Group C: Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur, Athletic Club Bilbao, Wolfsburg

Group D: Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, Bayern Munich, Benfica

Group E: Liverpool, Swansea City, Hertha Berlin, Villarreal

Group F: Derby County, Manchester United, PSG, PSV Eindhoven

Last season, we finished second in our section but did not progress to the knockout stages. We were the top scorers in the group phase after a 7-2 victory against West Ham United, 2-0 defeat by Villarreal and 3-3 draw with Benfica.

We did, however, reach the quarter-finals in our only other campaign in the competition in 2015/16.

Our Development Squad will also be taking part in the Checkatrade Trophy again this season where we will be one of the 16 invited Under-21 teams competing against 48 EFL clubs. The draw for the first round of that competition will take place on Wednesday.
