Harry Kane's 30th goal of the season was one of the most crucial as the striker spared our blushes and kept us in the FA Cup at Newport County on Saturday evening.

The League Two hosts did a real job on us in the first half and were eight minutes away from causing a major upset thanks to Padraig Amond's header seven minutes before the break.

But Kane popped up with a back-post tap-in with the wind blowing and the clock ticking down after Kieran Trippier's corner was flicked on by substitute Heung-Min Son to force a Wembley replay in this fourth round tie.

Son might have levelled earlier in the second period but for a vital save from Exiles goalkeeper Joe Day on a heavy Rodney Parade pitch.

Newport had enjoyed a great opening 45 minutes from their perspective and had a handful of efforts at goal, but a change of shape at the interval saw us back to our usual selves and the 1-1 draw means we're still in the hat for Monday's fifth round draw.

The Newport replay has provisionally been scheduled for Wednesday 7 February, kick-off 8pm, but is subject to change for live TV broadcast.

Team news

There were five changes to the team that started at Southampton in the Premier League last week with a raft of players missing out on the trip to Wales through slight injuries or illness. Trippier and Academy graduate Kyle Walker-Peters came in for Serge Aurier and Ben Davies at full-back, Juan Foyth replaced Davinson Sanchez at centre-half, Victor Wanyama came into the midfield for Dele and Fernando Llorente started up front alongside Kane with Son dropping to the bench.

Key action

Woodwork: Kane a whisker away - 32mins
We were outmuscled early on as Newport made life very uncomfortable in front of a hostile home crowd and enjoyed more shots at goal, ex-West Ham man Frank Nouble blazing over when completely free at the back post in a great fourth-minute chance. Robbie Willmott's free-kick was caught by Michel Vorm before we amost broke the deadlock at the end of our most fluid team move of the half. Mousa Dembele played in to the feet of Llorente, who sprung Moussa Sissoko free down the right and his delivery was flicked onto the near post by Kane. Goalkeeper Day might also have got fingertips to it.

Goal: Newport County 1-0 Spurs - Padraig Amond - 38mins
Ben Tozer's long throw-ins were always a useful weapon for County and after one was headed down by Jan Vertonghen, Willmott curled in an out-swinging cross from the right-hand corner of the box and Amond was there at the back post to plant a header down inside the far post, giving the home side the lead. The striker might have doubled his tally three minutes later after pouncing on Eric Dier's miscue, but Vorm stood up to block at his near post.

Save: Day denies substitute Son - 67mins
If the first half was a clash of styles, the second period was very much a battle of disciplines as it was attack versus defence for the most part. Kane headed Trippier's cross over shortly before the hour mark but we had a great chance to equalise on 67 minutes. Kane laid the ball off for Dele just outside the box and he guided it through to fellow substitute Son in the box on the left side, but his shot across goal was touched wide by Day with his leg.

Goal: Newport County 1-1 Spurs - Harry Kane - 82mins
Our superiority in the second half finally paid dividends with eight minutes left. Trippier's corner was flicked on by the outstretched leg of Son at the near post and fell perfectly for Kane to tap into the empty net at the back stick. We pushed for a winner with Kane's shot deflected just wide by on-loan Brighton defender Ben White while Dele couldn't quite head Kane's cross on target in the last of four added minutes.

Mauricio Pochettino said

"The FA Cup is magic and in the end, we're happy we can go to a replay because the first half wasn't good, very disappointing. Now it's another game to play between (our Premier League games against) Liverpool and Arsenal, but it's an opportunity to stay in the competition."

Harry Kane said

"It was very difficult and credit to Newport, they had a game plan, made it difficult for us and we weren't great, especially in the first half. Newport kept us there until the 82nd minute and it did start to get a bit worrying towards the end but we got the goal and we're still in the FA Cup. We managed to get out with a draw and we'll take that, we're still in the hat and hopefully we can now beat them in the replay."
