Spurs 2-0 Newport - Mauricio's reaction

Manager sees job done as we step into round five of the FA Cup

Mauricio Pochettino described a ‘professional performance’ as we secured a 2-0 win against Newport County for a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday night.

Two goals in eight minutes in the first half saw us home as we dominated the fourth round replay at Wembley.

Moussa Sissoko’s cross was turned into his own net by Dan Butler on 26 minutes before Erik Lamela finished off a slick move for his first goal since September, 2016. We went on to have 26 efforts without finding a third goal, Dele Alli closest of a number of near misses when he struck the crossbar in the second half.

We're in the next round. That was our objective. It was what we needed to do.

Toby Alderweireld played 90 minutes on his return from injury – his last appearance against Real Madrid on 1 November – with Harry Winks and Danny Rose also back in the starting line-up.

We now play League One side Rochdale – conquerors of Millwall - for the first time at Spotland in the fifth round on Sunday 18 February.

“The performance was good, the job is done and we're happy,” said Mauricio.

“A win is always difficult with the magic of the FA Cup, it can put both teams at a similar level in different circumstances, so we’re happy with the performance, happy with the win and now we're thinking about the next game - and that's the derby on Saturday.”

On Toby’s return from injury after over three months out
“It’s important everyone feels they are ready to fight and that’s good for the team, it increases the level and competition as we have a very busy schedule ahead.”

Mauricio on Erik's goal

Erik Lamela scored his first goal at Wembley as we toppled Newport 2-0 in our FA Cup fourth round replay.

Mauricio said: “It’s very good news for Erik.

"It's always so important to feel the net for an offensive player.

"After more than one year, he feels he can play 90 minutes and fight for a place in the starting 11.”
