Ledley: "If anyone beats my record, I hope it's a Spurs player"

The King on Christian's lightning strike

Ledley King was at Wembley last night when Christian Eriksen almost toppled his record fastest goal in the Premier League – although our legendary former skipper revealed he actually missed the moment!

Christian’s lightning strike after just 10.5 seconds in a memorable 2-0 win against Manchester United no doubt caught a few people out - including Ledley.

“I missed the goal!” Ledley told us today. “I had my back to the pitch and was shuffling along to my seat. I was like ‘what happened?’ I saw Christian running off to celebrate and my immediate reaction was ‘that must be quicker than my goal'."

People around me were soon saying '11, 12 seconds' so I knew then it was safe - for now!

Ledley King

As time goes by, Ledley admits he’s growing ever fonder of his achievement at Valley Parade on 9 December 2000, when he struck from 30 yards with just 10 seconds on the clock against Bradford City.

"I’ve said all along that I’m not too keen on my goal, it was deflected, a bit scruffy,” said Ledley, who made 323 appearances for us between 1999-2012 after graduating from our Academy.

"I didn’t used to particularly mind about the record but it’s gone on for so long now, I kind of want to hold onto it. Anyway, if anyone is going to beat it, I just hope it's going to be a Spurs player!"

Ledley, now 37 and as popular as ever in his role as a Club Ambassador, isn’t too surprised to see his record still intact over 17 years down the line.

"I’ve always "said the record will be tough to beat because these days teams tend to keep possession of the ball from kick-off, usually playing backwards,” he added.

"Christian’s goal was quite similar to mine – a pass forward, challenge for a header, run off the second ball. I thought Dele’s run was really important. Harry’s challenge and flick, Dele’s run, that desire to get onto it and then of course a great finish from Christian that he made look easy.

"That goal deserved the record, to be honest."
