Victory at the Emirates takes us into semi-finals

Arsenal 0-2 Spurs

Wed 19 December 2018, 21:35|Tottenham Hotspur

Goals from Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli secured victory at the Emirates and took us into the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Both goals were finished with aplomb. Sonny was sent clear by Dele after a quick clearance from Paulo Gazzaniga on 21 minutes, composed himself and planted past Petr Cech.

Harry Kane, just off the bench, provided the assist for Dele on 59 minutes. He lobbed a pass beyond Arsenal's defensive line to send Dele clear and the finish was exquisite, a dink over Cech, a silky touch completely out of sync with another feisty derby.

Victory sets up another derby and another meeting with Chelsea over two legs - details here. Manchester City take on Burton Albion in the other semi-final.

Mauricio Pochettino made four changes to the team that started against Burnley on Saturday - Paulo Gazzaniga, Harry Winks, Christian Eriksen and Son returned for Hugo Lloris, Oliver Skipp, Erik Lamela and Kane.

As always, the game went end-to-end. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey had early chances, Eriksen fired wide, Dele headed over and Gazzaniga produced a fine save as Mkhitaryan broke into the box - all inside the first 12 minutes.

Gazzaniga played his part in the crucial opener midway through the half. He launched an early clearance up to Lucas Moura, Dele got onto the second ball and sent Son away. The South Korean's finish was clinical as Cech advanced and we were ahead, a big moment.

Gazzaniga impressed in his first derby. He produced a fingertip save to tip Ramsey's effort onto the post just before half-time and was then involved in our crucial second goal just before the hour. This time he pinged a ball that Kane had time to bring down, turn and pick out Dele's run over the top. Dele raced through on goal and had the presence of mind - let alone the ability - to just lift the ball over Cech and home. Beautiful.

Arsenal substitute Alexandre Lacazette almost pulled a goal back immediately but dribbled a shot onto the post from close range. That might have made it interesting but there were few causes for alarm after that, Cech's save from Eriksen's 20-yarder the only serious threat to either goal in the final quarter.

Key moment

The opening goal is always so important in the derby and we could also point to Paulo Gazzaniga's fingertip save just before the break to maintain that lead at half-time. However, the key moment has to be Dele's goal for 2-0 just before the hour, giving us that important two-goal cushion - and what a delightful goal it was as well!

Mauricio Pochettino said of the goal: "It was an unbelievable finish. Dele was great and the team was amazing."

It’s my first victory at the Emirates. I’m so pleased. The performance was very solid and at the end we got what we wanted.

I’m so pleased. The performance was very solid and at the end we got what we wanted, to be in the semi-finals and now we prepare for Chelsea in the semi-finals.
