Wed 22 August 2018, 15:36|Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs Ladies midfielder Maya Vio has been shortlisted for Sports Personality of the Year at the Asian Achievers Awards.

The awards, entering their 18th year, celebrate outstanding work within the Asian community and acknowledge individuals’ achievements.

Maya has been nominated alongside Surrey cricketer Amar Virdi, weightlifter Anoushe Hussain and sport shooter Parag Patel.

Spurs Ladies manager Karen Hills spoke of her delight for the 21-year-old.

“We are all very proud of her. She’s been here since the Under-10s and is one of the longest-serving players at the club, so we know she is a hard-working lady,” said Karen.

Penalty pain in season opener

Spurs Ladies drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace in the Continental Tyres Cup in their first competitive game of the new 2018/19 season at the weekend, only to lose out on penalties.

“She won an award last year (inaugural Women’s Player Award at the annual Asian Football Awards) and to be nominated again for another and keep moving forward, on and off the field, is incredible.”

Maya is also training to be a doctor alongside her commitments with Spurs Ladies and Karen admires her work ethic.

“She has got her third year of exams coming up and to have the pressures of that as well as her football is a great example of the type of lady she is,” the manager added.

The winner of the Asian Achievers Sports Personality of the Year award will be revealed on 14 September at a ceremony at Grosvenor House in London.
