'We showed we're still in it' - goalscorer Christian on huge win at Palace

Wed 26 April 2017, 23:55|Tottenham Hotspur

Christian Eriksen fired home a memorable winner and then underlined the importance of the three points at Crystal Palace.

A tough assignment at Selhurst Park needed a moment of magic and the Danish playmaker provided it in the 78th minute.

Picking up the ball in space - a rarity on the night - Christian set his sights before striking the sweet spot from 30 yards, the ball dipping away from Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and into the corner.

The Danish playmaker has now scored five goals and provided 11 assists in his last 12 matches in all competitions - and this was a big one.

Just how big? “Yes, very, we showed we’re still in it,” said Christian.

“We have to focus on ourselves and of course Chelsea have to lose some points but this was our chance to keep going and we took it. This result gives us a confidence boost for the last five games. We have to keep going, focus on ourselves and see where it ends.”

Matched by in-form Palace in the first half, Mauricio Pochettino made two changes at the break within the 3-4-3 system and we were much-improved in the second half, with Christian again pulling the strings.

“It was a very tough game and we fought well, the whole team, the subs as well, everyone dug in and luckily we took the chance we had,” added Christian.

“After we scored, we showed a lot of maturity, showed we’re capable of keeping the ball in the corner which a few years ago maybe we wouldn’t have done. We did that and played it well. We have to do that to win things in the future.”

The win made it eight on the trot in this current sequence - now the second best run in the Club’s league history dating back to 1908-09.

Christian’s goal also took us to a new highest-ever points mark in the Premier League era on 74 and most wins in a Premier League season, 22.

"We’re on a good run, we have a lot of confidence and we’re giving it our all,” added Christian. “We only have one chance left and that’s these last five games.”
