‘We go into every game believing we can win’ - Dele

06 December 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Dele Alli says our Champions League success so far has all been down to the squad’s mentality.

We go into tonight’s final group match against APOEL at Wembley having secured top spot in Group H after exceptional performances home and away against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, plus a key away win in Cyprus on Matchday Two.

Many pundits painted Group H as ‘the group of death’ but we’ve come through with flying colours.

“When we first got the draw it was a tough group but we’re very confident in ourselves and we go into every game believing we can win,” said Dele.

“That’s the mentality we have to have going forward. It was a very good result away in Madrid, home as well and against Dortmund, so we’ve done very well and that can only give us confidence going forward.

“It’s important as a team and a squad we don’t go into these games (just) thinking we can compete, we have to go in with the mentality that we can win.

“That’s the way we’ve gone into every game in the Champions League so far, with the mentality that we deserve to be there and want to show what we can do - and we’ve done that.”

Dele missed the first three group games through suspension – including the draw in the Bernabeu back in October – but returned to the competition in style with two goals as we memorably toppled Real Madrid 3-1 in Matchday Four at Wembley.

“Growing up as a kid you want to play in the Champions League so to have to miss the first three games was horrible for me,” he added. “I can’t thank the manager enough for putting me back into the team in the first game I was back and I was happy to repay him with two goals.”

Dele will start against APOEL this evening with our opponents from Nicosia needing a positive result to try and progress to the Europa League. It’s between APOEL and Dortmund for third place and the German side face a trip to Madrid, who will finish second.

“Every game is important, every game is an opportunity to learn as a team and as a squad,” added Dele.

“There are no easy games in the Champions League. As a squad, we want to be playing in the Champions League and testing ourselves against the best teams in Europe. This is another opportunity - we want to win every game.”
