Clive Allen believes the trip to Hong Kong for the International Sevens tournament provided a valuable experience for his young group. The boys beat Kitchee and Sheffield FC before drawing with PSV Eindhoven on day one of the competition before suffering elimination on day two to Happy Valley by a 3-2 scoreline.

"It was disappointing in the end from a football point of view," reflected Clive. "One of the reasons was the climate and conditions when playing against the locals on the second day. The lads acquitted themselves really well and were certainly up for it but, let's just say, a dubious refereeing decision cost us in the quarter-final.

"It was a real experience for the boys, it was an absolutely fantastic event that was superbly organised."

It was our debut in the competition and Clive explained that the format took a bit of getting used to.

"It wasn't easy on a very big pitch for six players and a goalkeeper. It involved a lot of tactics and there were a lot of things that we learned during the first day. Aston Villa won the competition having taken part on four occasions - they certainly had the edge in terms of knowing what was needed to progress.

"I was delighted with the way our young players conducted themselves, I think we made a very good impression and I think it is an event we would like to re-visit."
