Spurs vs Sunderland - betting preview with Betfred

Mon 07 April 2014, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Sunderland are still looking for decent form at the time when they need it most. After a run of one defeat in nine had lifted them as high as 14th they’ve now slipped back into trouble having picked up one point from a possible 18.

Furthermore, they’ve been losing to teams around them and gaps are now opening up between the bottom three and safety.

Spurs have not lost against Sunderland since 2009/10, with five wins from seven meetings. However, those wins have all come by just one goal and they are yet to be ahead at half-time.

Spurs have a great second-half record since the start of last season and they showed their fighting spirit in their last home game when they came from behind to beat Southampton. While they’ve won eight of their last 11 home matches against bottom-six teams six of those wins have come having been level at half-time and one when they were behind at the break.

Sunderland are fighting for survival and this game may not be as easy as it looks on paper. We’d expect the Mackems to keep it tight in the first half before Spurs’ superior quality makes the difference and the 16/5 for Draw/Spurs in the Half-Time/Full-Time market looks too good to ignore.

Over 2.5 Goals also looks tempting here, with 14 of Sunderland’s last 19 trips to top-half teams seeing at least three goals. Furthermore, they’ve suffered six defeats despite scoring in their last 13 away matches against top-half sides. It’s 8/11 that we get three or more goals.
