Spurs 6-0 South China

Jermain Defoe grabbed a hat-trick as we completed the Barclays Asia Trophy with an emphatic 6-0 victory over South China at Hong Kong Stadium on Saturday night.

After the disappointment of the defeat to Sunderland earlier in the week, the lads were determined to put on a performance for the fantastic supporters who have followed their every step over the past week.

An own goal and two quick finishes from Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe made it 3-0 inside 45 minutes before the England striker completed his hat-trick in the second half, and an Andros Townsend free-kick ensured the scoreline reflected the one-sided nature of the match.

It was no more than the team deserved after a gruelling week of training in the extreme humidity and rain of the monsoon season in Hong Kong. Much of the build-up to the game had focussed on the bad weather but the match kicked-off in sunshine.

Andre Villas-Boas made two changes to the team that faced Sunderland; Lloris came in for Gomes and Defoe replaced Adebayor. And it was clear from the outset that Andre's side wanted to leave Asia on a high, playing with an intensity and determination from the first whistle. It did not take long for our early superiority to pay off.

Dembele, impressing with his strength and control in midfield, picked out Dempsey in the box before the American laid the ball off to Danny Rose. The young full-back's cross deflected off Tse Sean Ka Keung and past Zhang Chunhui at his near post.

The goalkeeper had Padilha to thank moments later as the Brazilian defender made a fantastic last ditch tackle to take the ball from Defoe's feet after the striker was sent through on goal by Dembele.

We zipped the ball around Hong Kong Stadium with ease and the inevitable second goal arrived after 34 minutes, albeit after we had spurned a couple of gilt-edged opportunities.

First Dempsey lifted a chip over the bar when through on goal and then Defoe hit the woodwork with a header, but the two players would soon combine to double our lead. Steven Caulker's header out from midfield found Defoe and he beat Tse Sean Ka Keung before cutting the ball back to Dempsey on the six-yard line, who slid the ball home.

Any hopes South China had of a comeback were effectively ended on the stroke of half-time when Kyle Walker's free-kick deflected through to Defoe, who took a touch in the box before slotting the ball home from 10-yards out.

And the home side's plight worsened shortly after the break when Zhang Chunhui could only kick his clearance into Defoe allowing the striker to collect the loose ball and finish into an empty net to make it 4-0.

Cheung Po Chun's side worked hard to score a consolation goal and Dhiego De Souza Martins dragged a shot a couple of yards wide of goal, but Lloris was merely a spectator for much of the night.

The rain returned after 75 minutes but that did not stop Defoe securing his hat-trick soon after, running onto Gylfi Sigurdsson's through ball hit with the outside of his boot and finishing with ease past Zhang Chunhui at the goalkeeper's near post.

Andros Townsend completed the rout with five minutes remaining, curling a 20-yard free-kick across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

The fans in Hong Kong Stadium were desperate to see South China score and they almost got their wish when De Souza Martins first forced Lloris into a spectacular diving save before then dragging a shot wide of goal when one-on-one with the Frenchman, but it wasn't to be.

A 6-0 win; just the way to end the Club's week in Asia.
