Spurs 2-2 United - Kyle reveals set-piece secret

02 December 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Kyle Walker has revealed a quick tactical exchange with Nacer Chadli led to his opening goal against Manchester United on Sunday.

Kyle’s low, driven free-kick went under the United well and beyond goalkeeper David de Gea to give us the lead at the Lane.

The decision to go for power rather than style on the set-piece proved inspired, but our right-back explained how Nacer’s input was key in the way the free-kick was taken.

“I had a word with Nacer and the wall was a bit too close to the net for me to go around or up and down. He said he thought the wall would jump, so try to go underneath it. I did that and luckily it went in,” Kyle said.

“That’s what I’m trying to bring back to my game. In my first season I was getting the ball in the box a lot and I’m going to continue working on my crossing, keep setting up chances and pick up a few assists.”

We were twice pegged back by Wayne Rooney as the game progressed – with Sandro’s second half stunner briefly seeing us back in front in the second period – but Kyle remained upbeat in reflecting on a good point earned against the champions.

“From a defensive point of view, we wanted to keep the lead,” he said. “That happens in football but I thought we all showed great spirit after the defeat at City.

“That performance was vital. In a way, it was a good game to bounce back, to show we’re a top quality team. The dressing room is full of enthusiasm and energy and it was a great performance.”

Kyle also believes Sandro is capable of producing more magic in front of goal in the wake of the Brazilian’s thunderous strike against United.

“He bangs a few in like that in training and we’re all encouraging him to have a few shots at goal,” Kyle added. “Last season he scored a fantastic goal at Fulham and if he shoots a lot more, we’ll get a few more goals from him.”
