Dele Alli might well grab the headlines for his winner but Mauricio Pochettino was quick to highlight the contribution of Michel Vorm after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Barnsley were well-organised and tough to break down in the third round tie at Wembley, even though we ended with 25 efforts at goal. Many shots were blocked by the red wall protecting Adam Davies’ goal as the Tykes defended stoutly.

The visitors’ big chance arrived a matter of seconds into the second half when Ike Ugbo flicked the ball over Jan Vertonghen and pulled the trigger from about 10 yards. Vorm was ready though and palmed away in what was his only serious action of the night.

Twenty minutes later and we found the winner as Kieran Trippier broke into the box from the right and squared for Dele to bury his third goal of the season in all competitions.

“First, I want to congratulate Barnsley, they defended well and it was so tough but I thought the performance was good and we dominated the game,” said Mauricio.

“Michel Vorm was fantastic in the first action of the second half, we need to congratulate him too because that save was fantastic and he is a top, top goalkeeper.”

There were many positives for the manager to ponder - Kyle Walker-Peters did well again at left-back, Juan Foyth made his debut, Fernando Llorente his full debut and Harry Winks completed his first 90-minute stint since a serious ankle injury in April.

“I’m happy for Harry because he felt very good on the pitch and that's very important for us, that he feels well and 100% again,” added Mauricio.

“For many reasons we're so happy, there were many positives and it’s good to be in the next round."
