Real Madrid v Spurs - advice for fans travelling to Madrid - updated

15 October 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Travel advice and information for supporters travelling to Madrid, Spain for our Champions League Group H match against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Update - Monday 16 October

Following representations by Club staff at the security meeting this evening, Real Madrid have confirmed that they will accept photocopies if passports and driving licences as official ID if the supporters hotel has retained their original passport.

Important notice

Please note that supporters are requested not to travel to Madrid unless they have purchased their tickets direct from the Club as both representatives from Real Madrid and local security companies have advised that tickets purchased locally are likely to be counterfeit.

A thorough security check will be in place at each stadium entry point where the name on the ticket will be checked against photo ID.

Please note that passports or driving licences are the only forms of photo ID that are permissible and that copies of the documents will not be accepted. Tickets will be confiscated from and entrance refused to anyone unable to match the name on the ticket to the photo ID.

Madrid is the financial and cultural hub for Spain, and much of Southern Europe. There is a huge amount to see and do both historically and in terms of bars and restaurants in the city.

Travelling to the Bernabeu

Supporters travelling as part of the official Thomas Cook package will be dropped off at the stadium (approximately 25 minutes from the airport). From there we would advise supporters to make their way to the meeting point at Avenida De Brasil which is about a nine-minute walk from the stadium. This area houses a selection of pubs, restaurants shops and a garden area. Please note that the local Police will provide an escort for supporters returning to the stadium at 7pm.

Whilst supporters travelling independently are offered excellent transport links to the city centre from the airport and to the Bernabeu, the metro is the fastest and most affordable way to travel around. The Metro line 8 will transport you to and from all terminals of the airport within 15 to 20 minutes. The same line can also be used to head to the stadium where you should depart at The Santiago Bernabeu Station which is approximately 100 metres from the stadium.

At the Bernabeu

On arrival at the stadium, please make your way to Tower D where the initial ticket/ID check will be undertaken. Once this check has been completed you will be requested to enter Tower D where you will be searched by private security and police officers. Female personnel will be on hand to search female supporters.

Stairs and escalators provide access to both the fourth and fifth tiers of the stadium. Welfare and catering facilities are only available on the fourth tier concourse - supporters from the fifth tier may access the same facilities on production of their match ticket.

There will be a number of Club stewards working within our area of the stadium. Please liaise with them if you require any assistance or would simply like to report anything of concern. Call this number - 07917-880445 – if you need assistance and you are unable to locate them at any stage.

Whilst we would recommend visiting the Bernabeu’s excellent Souvenir Shop located near to Tower D, we would suggest avoiding the home section at the south end of the stadium.

Please arrive early - KO 8.45pm local time

The stadium opens 90 minutes before kick-off and Real Madrid officials have requested that supporters arrive early as ticket checks and thorough search procedures will undoubtedly increase the time required to access the stadium.

Inside the stadium

We have been advised that Spanish law forbids supporters to stand and congregate/watch the game from gangways, staircases or emergency exit routes. Representatives from Real Madrid have specifically asked that this information be communicated to all visiting supporters and we would ask that you adhere to this ruling. In addition Real Madrid have asked that fans sat in the front rows of both tiers must be seated for safety reasons.

Please note that the seating terrace is steep and fans should take care during their visit to the Bernabeu, especially when accessing and exiting their seats.

Whilst supporters are welcome to bring flags and banners to the stadium it should be noted that all flags/banners will be checked at the turnstiles and anything considered inappropriate will be confiscated.

It is common policy at stadia in the UK and elsewhere in Europe that flags of an overtly religious/political nature or that could be interpreted as inflammatory or discriminatory will not be permitted. Police Authorities have advised that such flags will not only be prohibited but that they will be confiscated. Please respect this request.

Bag policy

There is a strict no bag policy in place at the Bernabeu and you are asked to either leave all bags on the coach or in your hotel rooms. However, Real Madrid have advised us that ladies will be permitted to take small handbags.

We have been advised that it is common practice at the Bernabeu for visiting supporters to be requested to remain in the stadium for approximately 20 to 30 minutes after the final whistle. Please be patient during this time.

Official club supporter coaches will be parked adjacent to the stadium (close to Tower D) for a speedy departure to the airport.

We are very proud to be competing in the Champions League and would request that all of our supporters respect both local amenities and the Spanish culture. It is considered unacceptable behaviour to hang flags or banners from local statues/architecture and flags that could be construed as inflammatory should not be displayed.

We would also ask that you respect the Police Authorities at all times and follow their instructions. Anti-social behaviour (especially drunkenness) in the city centre or at the Bernabeu will not be tolerated and fans risk arrest if they behave inappropriately.

Please remember that we are all ambassadors of the Club and are expected to behave as such.

Have fun. Stay safe and remember…together we are Tottenham Hotspur.
