MICHAEL'S THE MAN

Paul Robinson didn't deliberate long before naming his player of the season.

Paul Robinson didn't deliberate long before naming his player of the season.

"Michael Dawson," replied England's number one as he reflected on the defender's 58 appearances in our 59 games this season, a large chunk without central defensive partner and skipper Ledley King.

"With the amount of games he’s played and the performances he’s turned in, he's my player of the season.

"He’s not had a bad game and if he’s had an average game, he’s still been good. He’s been an unsung hero, especially with Ledley out for so long. He’s been our Mr Consistency at the back and he’s grown in stature as the season’s progressed."

Robbo - who, it has been perhaps overlooked, completed his second-successive ever present season in the Premiership - also had praise for the likes of Pascal Chimbonda, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Ricardo Rocha, new players coming into a defensive unit that suffered no end of injuries last term.

"I think the lads did well, they settled in quickly and it's never easy," added Robbo, who will soon report for Engand duty again and a 'B' international against Albania on May 25 alongside team-mates Daws, Ledley, Jermaine Jenas, Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon.

"We were unlucky in that we travelled to Bolton, Liverpool and Manchester United in the early part of the season, so didn’t get off to the best of starts, but I felt the boys gelled after that, we got together as a team and as a squad and the results have shown that. The finish fifth again was a great achievement."
